((Le time skip))

Nena wrinkled her nose as she woke up. The room she was in smelled like...bleach. There was a soft beeping noise echoing through the room. Where was she? She blinked as she opened her eyes, sitting up slowly. She gasped as she did so, falling back into the mattress.

"Nena! Honey, don't try to sit up --you bruised your ribs!" Nena focused on her mother, who was sitting beside her bed. There was another bed on the other side of her mother, occupied by Allen. Nena groaned. She was in the hospital.

"I'm very disappointed in you, Nena," her mother said seriously. "How could you take Allen into such a dangerous place? You could've gotten yourselves killed!"

Allen woke up, bleary eyed, to hear a conversation going on between Nena and her mother. All he  heard of it was ''You could've gotten yourselves killed!'' He figured, from the tone of her voice, that she was blaming Nena. Sitting up, slightly dizzy with a headache, he leaned forward and held his head in his hands. ''Hey, it was my idea.'' He said, groaning slightly all the same. Even he could by now see it was a stupid idea. Nena's mother was right; if he had been just a few seconds slower, she'd have been killed... He really was an idiot.

"Oh, Allen, sweetie, there's no need to blame yourself. Nena should have been more responsible. I'm so glad you weren't hurt as badly as you could have been by Nena's reckless behavior," Nena's mother gushed, turned away from her daughter to beam at Allen. Nena felt her cheeks burn in embarrassment and shame. She looked away from Allen and her mother, not wanting to look at them. She shouldn't have listened to Allen. She should have turned around and marched back home. She could have gotten them both killed.

Allen felt sick. Not only had he nearly gotten Nena killed, but now her mother was ignoring her to go to him. Time to fix things his way, which usually meant he messed up badly. Oh well. ''I'm the eldest; I should be the responsible one.'' He said firmly, or as firmly as was possible for one with their head in their hands and looking downwards for fear of throwing up or something. He wanted to know if Nena was alright, how bad she was hurt, but decided he'd check later, when he was feeling better.

Nena looked back over at that. Allen was... He wasn't blaming her? She watched as her mother's smile faltered, and then came back twice as bright and and three times as forced. "Whatever you say, sweetie," she said, then stood up. "Are either of you hungry? You've been asleep all night." Nena's stomach answered for her, grumbling loudly. She blushed.

"When can we leave?" she asked softly. She just wanted to go home and crawl into her bed. For some reason, she had the urge to hug her pillow.

"Soon, Nena. The doctor and your father are going over the release forms now."

Nena nodded, and as her mother left the room, she closed her eyes. She rolled over so that her back was facing Allen, feeling oddly depressed.

''Not particularly, no.'' Allen replied. Oddly enough, even though he hadn't eaten in about a day, he wasn't hungry in the slightest. Strange. Maybe he was coming down with something.

Not moving from where he was, remaining with his head buried in his hands, he peeked through his fingers at her. He saw her hand, bandaged up, over the cover, and quickly looked down again. He'd done that to her. He'd hurt her like that... he was feeling even more terrible, now, and he was guilt-rdden.

"I'm sorry," Nena whispered, still not facing Allen. It was quiet enough in the room that her voice echoed. A loud, high-pitched squeal broke the silence, and Nena winced as a pair of arms wrapped around her ribs.

"Oh, Nena! Your mom called and told me what happened and I totally thought you were gonna, like, die!" a shrill voice said. Nena repressed the urge to sigh, and rolled over to face at the girl next to her bed.

"Hey, Maribelle," she said, forcing a smile. "I thought you and your family were leaving for a vacation last night."

The girl shook her head, her dark brown curls flying around her head. "Oh, no, Nena! I'd, like, never leave when you're in the hospital! I'm so glad you're alright!" Her arms wrapped around Nena once again, and Nena fought not to show the way the pain it caused took away her breath. "Its, like, such a pity that that awful wound on your hand is gonna scar. Talk about, like, ugly!"

Nena's smile was practically carved out of plastic. Maribelle had never been a particularly good friend of hers, and that was the reason why. Maribelle loved trying to make other girls feel horrible about themselves. "Thank you for your concern, Mare. I'd like to get some rest, if you don't mind," she said, hoping the other girl would leave.

"Oh, of course, Nena! I'll just --and who is this?" Maribelle asked, a dangerous tone to her voice that suggested she was about to unleash a wicked rumor. Nena wished she was in a coma so she wouldn't have to deal with it.

Allen looked up as he saw a girl enter the room, and the plastic way she was smiling, the perfectly joyful tone in her voice... wow, she was even better at acting fake than Nena was. Must be a birth right, in this town, to be born nothing more than a fake husk. He couldn't help but smile at how... false she was. Hopefully, for her sake, she wouldn't try speaking to him.

His smile dissipated, though, when she started telling Nena how ugly the scar she was gonna be left with was. She had no right- none -to be speaking to Nena like that. His fists were clenched, but he forced himself to relax, just as she turned around. He wasn't smiling, though. Allen wasn't the type of lad who could just plaster on a fake smile. Not that he wanted to be.

''I'm Nena's 'adopted' brother, Allen. Technically, we're not related, but...'' He said all this with a flat tone, but now he clenched his jaw, and his voice was slightly lowered, ''If you ever say that something about her is ugly- and I mean ever - you will be sorry.'' His eyes were narrowed, now, and he was still definitely not smiling.

Nena stared at Allen in horror. Why would he --why would he say that?

"Really," Maribelle practically purred, her smile resembling a cat who'd just snacked on a particularly sweet canary. She didn't seem to notice Allen's threat. She stepped closer to his bed, leaning in to peer at him closely. "Adopted brother, you said? I didn't know your family was, like, adopting, Nena. And you picked someone so....interesting." Her voice was laced with such sugary sweetness that Nena felt almost sick.

"Yes," she said softly, "I didn't really..." She trailed off, cleared her throat, and said more firmly, "I didn't really get a choice in the matter. My parents made the decision without me, really."

"Oh? He seems to, like, like you," Maribelle replied, not glancing away from Allen. Nena squirmed uncomfortably. Maribelle was talking abut Allen like he was some sort of mangy dog. "Do you, like, get along alright? Do you like him?"

"We --um, I don't --I mean, I do, but--" Nena stammered. Maribelle was going to destroy her. The girl  turned slowly, an evil glint in her eyes.

"I see," she murmured. She gave Nena another quick hug, kissed her on the cheek, and said, "I've got to, like, get going. My parents, like, rescheduled my flight. Bye." Then she turned and left her room. Nena stared after her for a moment, and turned her gaze to Allen. She glared.

"Why did you do that?" she hissed angrily.

''She was insulting you. As your 'big brother', I've gotta stand up for you.'' He said quite simply, shaking his head for a moment before getting an interesting look on his face and resting his head in his hands. What was up with her? Didn't she expect him to be angry at people who insulted her?

After all, they may not have been actually related, but he was, technically, her big brother. And anyway, he had taken a rather liking to her.

"No, you don't have to stand up for me!" Nena said, angry. "I can handle it by myself. That's what I've been doing for every day until you showed up! She is my friend. I can deal with her perfectly well on my own. Saying what you did --you just made anything she would have said about me a hundred times worse! You can't just--" she broke off, struggling with her anger to find the words. "You can't just say things like that. And for the record, she didn't insult me!" Nena stopped for another moment, rethinking her words. "Well, yeah, okay, she did, but not directly. That's just the way things are! People are mean, and they pretend not to be. And you pretend it doesn't hurt. I don't want...." she took a breath, her anger dwindling. "I don't want you to start out here with a reputation like.... like a psychopath or something! And not for my sake, either. For your own. You might think you can handle whatever the world throws at you, but people are cruel, Allen, and it only takes a few well aimed jabs to crack a person's armor, no matter how thick it is."

Allen was gritting his teeth, trying not to shout at her, as she gave her lecture, before speaking, through his still-clenched jaw.
''Nena, how many times must I tell you. I don't lie, or hide how I feel. People may try their best to break me down, as they've been doing since I was old enough to understand what they said, but I have the most practice. I've been crushed down and built back up more times than I can count. I know perfectly well that the world we live in is cruel, and harsh. Believe me.'' As he said this, he smirked slightly before raising his head and looking up at her.

'Oh, yeah... And if any of your friends are as fake as that one was, well... They're in for some damn wake-up call.'' Had her other friend not been a girl, he probably would've punched her square in the face. He did plan, though, that he would hit them back twice as hard with words again if anyone ever tried to insult Nena.

Nena opened her mouth, fully prepared to protest furiously, but one glance at Allen's face and her mouth snapped shut. She wouldn't be able to talk any sense into him, and she knew it. She was silent for a long while, glaring at the wall and avoiding looking at Allen. She wondered, briefly, where her mother had gone; surely it didn't take this long to get food?

Finally she grew bored of the wall (really, it was white and completely blank --not much to look at) and, with a heavy sigh, she rolled over so that she was facing Allen. Her ribs twinged and she breathed in sharply, but she did not move again. She stared at Allen for another long moment, before asking softly, "Are you telling me that, if someone you cared about did something you didn't like, you would automatically tell them that they're wrong, no matter how much it could ruin your relationship with them? You wouldn't do whatever you could to keep them happy, even if it went against what you wanted or hurt you?"

Allen saw her looking at the wall, obviously trying to avoid looking at him, so he followed suit and focused on looking at the end of his bed. When she turned and spoke to him, he turned his head to look at her, but didn't really have an answer for that question. ''I don't know, Nena. I've never had anyone that I've really cared about before. I like to think I'd do what's best for them; if that meant  hurting them, well... so be it. If it meant lying, though, I don't know if I could do that. It would mean learning how to do something I've never done before.''

His blank face molded into a frown for a moment, as he pondered on how exactly some one learned how to lie. Was there some technique to it? Or were most people just born with it?

Nena stared. "Never done before?" she asked incredulously. "You're telling me you've never lied. To anyone. Ever?" She pushed herself up, wincing as the slice on her hand stung. "I don't believe you. You're lying right now, you have to be. How can you possibly live your entire life without lying at all?"

[[LOLS. WELL DONE. XDDD]]

Allen's face looked a little bewildered. ''Not as far as I can remember, no. Why? D'you find that bad or something?'' His voice took on a slightly flat tone, as he tried to figure out what on earth this girl wanted from him. If he had lied to her, she'd only be screaming at him. Why was she so difficult to understand...

''What do you mean?'' He said at last, after pondering for a moment. ''I'm far from perfect.'' He added, before looking thoughtful.

Nena scoffed. "Far from perfect, and yet you've never told a lie? Either your perfect, inhuman, or just plain crazy." She though for a moment before a small grin broke out across her face. "Then again, maybe just plain crazy isn't too far off. Who tries to have fun in an abandoned factory? I mean, really!" she laughed lightly, trailing off as she stared and the bandage around her hand. "Pfft," she murmured wrinkling her nose. "Scar, indeed. Bet all the boys'll find that attractive. That'll help me get a date, for sure."

''I believe the 'just plain crazy' part suits me perfectly, like you say. In all fairness, it did seem like a very good idea at the time.'' He murmured, rubbing his eyes before looking at her again. ''Hey, don't talk like that. I have known plenty of lads who actually like girls with a few 'fun stories to tell', which they claim are usually the ones with the scars. Besides, it doesn't matter what you look like; it's what's inside that counts, for most guys. Sure, they'll look at a pretty girl that has every guy on her arm, but they won't want a tramp for a girlfriend.'' He gave a small chuckle at the end, remembering a time when a 'tramp' had tried to get him to ask her out. She had, eventually, run back to her friends after Allen had given her a melancholy statement of what she would amount to if she showed her nickers off at every posible opportunity.
