"I'm sorry," Nena said softly, almost automatically. She couldn't help it; she was never very good at comforting people, so whenever sombody said something sad and she wasn't sure how to respond, she would apologize. "I hear crows are extremely intelligent," she said after a moment. "If I'm honest, they kind of creep me out --that clicking noise they make, their mating call or whatever, gives me chills-- but they're beautiful. There's this one that hangs about my school, and he's huge. Sometimes he'll swoop down over groups of students and nearly touch the tops of their heads. I think he finds it fun."

''I don't see why you're apologising.'' Allen replied, looking a little surprised. He smiled, though, when she mentioned a crow that hung out near her school. ''Yeah, they're one hell of a lot smarter than most people think. And you'd have to be a bit more deive on the clicking noise; people say language defines intelligence, and if it does, crows have more brains than almost every other bird. Besides their three hundred natural calls, they can copy the calls of a lot of other birds, too. Compare that with a parrot's capacity of one hundred sounds.

Well now. I should... Probably put something intelligent here. At some point. Eventually.

Nena stared blankly at Allen for a long moment. "Why on EARTH do you know so much about birds?" she asked finally, pushing the hood of Allen's jacket up  over her head. It smelled a bit like peppermint, she thought, or maybe cinnamon. The thought made her scowl; that didn't seem like the kind of scent Allen should have. She was expcting something along the lines of smoke or burnt marshmellows.

Allen shrugged. ''I just like them, I guess. I like a lot of animals.'' He smiled again, glancing up at the sky. He thought he saw clouds beginning to form, and scowled. ''C'mon, if you want to get home, we best get moving. I'll teach you how to get a crow to land on your shoulder on the way.'' He grinned, before slowly starting to walk in the direction he guessed was the way to Nena's house.

"But I don't want a crow to land on my shoulder," Nena mumbled, following closely behind Allen.  She shivered as the wind began picking up and another thunder clap boomed through the air. "This was a horrible idea," she told Allen. "Why on Earth would we walk to my house? I don't even know how to get there from the hospital."

''Well, I'll teach you anyway.'' Allen replied, grinning. He glanced up as he felt a few drops of rain fall onto his head, and sighed as the rain began picking up. ''Don't blame me, this was your idea. So, basically, we have: You, who lives here and don't know the way back to your house, and me, who doesn't live here and wouldn't know the way back to your house if I was a block away from it.'' He sighed, shrugging his shoulders, before grinning. ''This oughta be fun.''

"Yes, but I blame you for my sudden ability to rebel --I never did it before you came along and made me feel like I was supposed to." A drop of rain hit her on the nose and into her nostril, making her sneeze. Another drop followed soon after that, and then it was pouring. She scowled. "We should just go back. We're going to catch pneumonia." Despite her words, she kept walking forward, not really wanting to go back. "Can you teach me how to get a raven on my shoulder in this weather?"

''Of course you're supposed to rebel. If it weren't for rebellion, we'd all still be living in a world where someone was discriminated against because of the colour of their skin or where they were born.'' Allen replied simply, shrugging his shoulders. ''Nah. Pneumonia is better than having to spend any more time in that bloody place.'' He tilted his head to the side for a moment, thinking. ''Not sure. If we were near a lake or something, I could get a duck to sit on your head, but I dunno what I can do here.''

"...A duck," Nena repeated. "On my head." She stared at Allen as though he'd just sprouted wings and a tail. "You are never --and I mean never-- allowed near my head. Never. That's a rule. Bad things will happen to you if you try to put a duck on my head, I promise you."

Allen lauged. ''Really. I'm not allowed near your head?'' He said, chuckling still. ''Well, what if I just put a hand on your head?'' He replied, unable to keep from chuckling again. Reaching out, he placed his hand flat on her head and decided it would be so much fun to just leave it there.

[[Allen, you be an idiot. > .>

Nena's eyes narrowed as Allen's hand landed on her head. "What did I just tell you?" she asked, glaring at him. When his hand didn't move, she let out and irritated huff, twisted out from underneath his hand, and kicked him in the shin. Hard. "Ow!" she said, holding her foot. "Crap, your shin is hard!"

Allen rolled his eyes, bending over to rub his shin. His stark white hair was now dripping wet and plastered to his head, and he was glad the red stripe was permanent dye rather than that cheap one that washed off when it rained. ''Jesus christ. It's you who decided to kick me, not me. Besides what did you expect?'' He asked, chuckling, straightening himself up.

"I expected you to not touch my head in the first place," Nena said, glaring at Allen. Stupid Allen. Had to do the exact opposite of everything anyone told him to do. "Because you're just such a freaking rebel-badass, with your rainbow glove and your infinite knowledge of parrots," she muttered under her breath. She huffed at him, then started walking again, deciding to ignore him. She would get home much faster and in much less pain if she did.

Allen couldn't help but chuckle, but followed along behind Nena anyway. Apparently, Nena had a problem with his lucky glove. Wasn't his fault it was one of the few things he owned that was lucky. ''Well, it's your own fault for telling me not to go near your head or bad things would happen. I was just curious as to what those bad things were.'' He tilted his head to the side, thinking for a moment. It sure was getting cold, anyway. ''Besides, my 'knowledge' isn't just limited to parrots, and it isn't infinite.'' He chuckled again, shaking his head.

"Its either limited or it isn't," Nena huffed. She rubbed her fingers together and blew warm air into her hands, trying to thaw them. She glared at Allen's gloves again. She shivered, pulling Allen's jacket tighter, and then felt bad for glaring. He'd given up his jacket and was probably freezing by now. She could allow him the luxury of warm hands. "Curiosity killed the cat, you know," she said after a while. She didn't really like the idea of saying it --it was a cliched, boring old proverb-- but she wanted something to fill the silence.

Allen pondered over what she said for a moment. He hated that old saying. ''I like cats, y'know.'' He replied simply, shrugging his shoulders. ''Besides, without curiosity and a yearning to know if there was something more, humans would all be living in caves still...'' He trailed off, going into thought, before grinning again. ''Actually, that wouldn't be so bad. A stop to global warming right there.''

Nena wrinkled her nose. "Cats?" she asked disdainfully. "Really? And living in caves?" She shook her head in dismay. "You have got to be the oddest boy I've ever met. Why would you ever think living in a cave would be fun?"

Allen shrugged. ''That bit might not be so fun, but the world not dying would be pretty cool.'' He said simply, looking up to the sky as he heard a crack of thunder somewhere in the distance. He counted how long it took for the next boom to come, wondering if it was safe to be wandering around lost during a thunder storm. Oh well, he thought, it was eighteen miles away, so they were fine.

"How is it that I've known you for a day and a half, and I've already had one near-death experience and now I'm either going to catch pneumonia or be struck by lightning," Nena said offhandedly, not really minding enough to mean her complaints. "Why don't your gloves match?" she asked suddenly, eyes locking on the rainbow glove.

Allen sighed, shrugging his shoulders. Now that she put it that way, he was beginning to feel the guilt of what happened to her hand again. ''I don't know. The rainbow one is lucky, and my batting glove I've had for as long as I can remember.'' He said simply, running a hand through his hair distractedly. He was busy listening to the thunder, and he didn't like what he heard. It was coming closer, about twelve miles away by then.
