Dusk was settling over the mountains, and yet Mick kept running. He loved the burn of his muscles, the strain of his lungs. The cool, evening air bit into his face, making tears stream down his cheeks. He bolted through the woods like lightning, not so much as leaving a footprint or stirring a leaf.
He found a path following a small creek, winding down into a gorge-like valley. The forest split into an open meadow, laced with wildflowers blooming in the evening light. He slowed to a stop, shaking his head. He panted, looking around before sitting slowly on his haunches. Then almost impulsively, almost out of instinct, he let out a low, wavering cry. He howled softly into the night, a sad, lonely sound. He wasn't loud enough for another wolf to hear, but it was enough for him to voice his heartbreak to the stars that shone down on him. Memories swam through his mind, making him feel dizzy and lost.
He would have never let go of himself if there had been a soul around. But now, alone, he couldn't stop himself. Where nobody could see, where he could hold his pride, he voiced his sadness to the silence, to the stillness, to the shadows.

Yuki followed him. When he stopped in the meddow she waited in the tree line. She didn't want to disturb him but she couldn't help feel the need to go over and nuzzle him, to show him that he could lean on her to let her help him with his sadness. She wanted to make him smile again but she didn't think he would like it too much and would think it was pity.
