How many of you guys would like to see these brought back? What are the possible benefits? Drawbacks?
Anyone who was participating when the old debate forums were around, your input is especially valuable to help current staff understand why they were removed, and if that decision is one that should hold today or not.

I vaguely remember them, but just as being "there", I never actually took part in them.
I'd like to see this brought back, and maybe this would bring the topics that are debated in the shoutbox to the forums instead?
There would probably be more discussion, even of sensitive topics, since I believe it was you, (it might have been someone else, excuse the terrible memory) that said it's allowed to be discussed in forums because you can click at your own will, it's not something you have to see, as if you were in the shoutbox.
And maybe this might bring heated debates off the shoutbox all together, I don't know.
Would debates still go on in the shoutbox, or if it became an actual "debate", would it just be asked to be moved to the forums?

It would depend on the situation in the SB pretty much like now. But if we brought back debate forums, and possibly created a whole new forum section for discussion of those type topics, we would have somewhere to link on the SB to invite further discussion.

I think its a decent idea provided it is checked often enough to make sure it doesnt get too heated. But I think it is less likely to get so heated here as the sb. So if people are willing to check up on it then sure.

basically as far as I am aware the debates forum ended because things became less debate and more flame wars. in the later stages users were getting hate mail and the like, I think. I'd be eager to see it implemented again.
but the downside is it'll start unspoken feuds again, especially between sb users. if two of them are head on aggressive to each other, they'll probably antagonize each other in the sb or talk smack behind their backs. and rumor mongering and drama is the last thing we need on the site.
but with the new logging system, we'd be able to see and fix a lot of what went/will go wrong. I'd say I'm neutral leaning towards pro for them to be back.

I think it's a terrible idea because users have shown repeatedly that they simply cannot handle debates in a civilized manner. More often than not, I see the debate degrade into a petty argument and staff have to intervene.
Yes, there are the few blessed users who are perfectly capable of expressing their views and can disagree with some one else's without being entirely unreasonable about it, but the majority of Res, as far as I have seen, is completely and utterly inept at civil debates.
The moment some one disagrees they take it as an insult and jump at the other user's throat. If some one sees a differing opinion they take it personally.
Rescreatu members are simply not mature enough to have a debates forum again.

While I do appreciate your opinion Whit, it is important to remember that it is not the opinion of everyone that the site in general is not mature enough to have a debates forum. <3
(Side note: I didn't intend for this thread to be "support" or "no support"; it isn't a suggestion. I'm just curious about what happened last time, why there was no solution found, and whether or not this is something that could feasibly be suggested in the future.)

I think that it might be good (if they do come back) If a user could get banned just from them threads/ topics (probably worded that terribly xD ) I dont remember the debate fourms but I have seem a thread or two where civilized debats/ discussions have taken place and worked out with no one getting angry, hateful and Ott. I think it could work if "controlled" properly and if certain users who show a tendancy towards getting angry and lack the ability to be civil can be blocked from the debate fourms altogether or just from that particular debate. maybe even anonymous votes if the debate should stop or if the user is getting "too much" and heading on a rage path. I guess the problem with votes is that anouther user can just vote against some one who disagrees (but disagreeing in a civil way) |

Access restriction is an interesting idea, thanks for that. =)
I would not want to create a situation where a user could get banned merely from being involved and having a moment of human weakness, definitely not.

I think it would be neat if the Debate Forums were brought back. My reasoning for this is similar to what Zen said, I have seen some arguments and debates form on some Forum threads, and this causes the threads to be messy and cluttered and unable to serve the purpose for which they were created.
If these were to be revived, they would have to be watched very carefully by staff. Maybe a new position could be created specifically for the Debate forums, that way there would be little question about debates getting too heated...? (just a thought) My thinking behind this is that the debates do have a decent possibility of getting too out of hand; and, taking into consideration the wide variety of ages among our user base, it would be extremely important to keep the Debate Forums in check, should they be brought back.
I really would like to see these brought back, I think it really would be a good idea. Plus, I like Zen's idea of having access restriction if things got out of hand. Also, I do believe I was around for debate forums. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I think there was a rule posted at the top saying that threads would be locked for a certain amount of time if it got too heated, that way everyone could cool down. I, honestly, like Zen's idea better than the previous rule.
