I love speculative evolution
and after a discussion in the SB the other night thought it would be fun to do a little project.

(that will probably get dropped within the next week as I decide it's too much work and forget about it Ooop)

What is speculative evolution/ biology:

"Speculative evolution is a genre of speculative fiction and an artistic movement focused on hypothetical scenarios in the evolution of life, and a significant form of fictional biology."

In a nut shell I'll be reading creatu deions/ looking at their design and thinking about how they may evolve to be better suited to their habitat and life styles.

If you have any ideas send me an Rmail and I may get around to drawing it
:D

KIOKA
Current day:

  • The Kioka is a strange and mysterious Creatu. From the moment it first emerges from its egg to the day it dies, the Kioka's hooves never touch the ground. Even in sleep this Creatu continues to float as though gravity never existed. Stranger still is the glossy ribbon which makes the Kioka famous. The mothers will wrap a ribbon from their own bodies around their child's egg. After the baby hatches it carries this ribbon everywhere it goes. As it matures the ribbon grows and multiplies and tangles itself around the creatu. No one is certain of the exact purpose of these ribbons for the Creatu, but they are said to be one of the finest materials known to man. For this reason the Kioka were hunted to near extinction making them the rare and elusive Creatu they are today."

    Rambling thoughts:
    *Legs are useless
*Sounds like the mother detaches a ribbon from their body to wrap around the egg to incubate it- this seems to be a waste of energy.
I imagine the "mother" ribbon attaches it's self to the rear of the creatu which is why it's the biggest ribbon
*people poaching for their ribbons= bad :C

    where to take this:
    *no legs
    *egg stays with mother
    *smaller ribbons

    30million (lol?) years from today:

*No legs, just stumpy wing things
*eggs stay with mother- born floating

    Kioka 60million years:

    *LOL

    Kioka 2 BILLION years

TESURI

  • Centuries ago, the Tesuri may have been glimpsed soaring through the skies of Scria; their sky blue coats and white feathers the perfect camouflage for these graceful, airborne hunters. Even in their native world they were a rare sight, for they kept to themselves, giving other Creatu and humans a wide berth. Even so, it became obvious at some point that the Tesuri were having difficulties when reported sightings began to decrease each year. Loyna, the Guardian of Scria, set out to find them and discover what was happening. Those Tesuri that consented to speak with her told her tales of their prey being stolen by other hunters, and about how they had been driven from traditional hunting areas.

Loyna contacted the other Guardians, and gained permission from Palora to relocate the Tesuri to Atquati. Only a few groups consented to cross the portal and leave their home, but it was enough. Though the Tesuri vanished from Scria, they thrived on Atquati with little competition from other land predators. They adapted to their environment by learning how to swim and waterproof their feathers with oils from certain Atquatian plants. The translucent film that protected their eyes from wind while in flight was also useful for helping the Tesuri to see under water.

Despite their brush with extinction, the Tesuri have survived. Though they still keep to themselves in the wild, they have been known to shelter and guide lost travelers back to known landmarks. Their ability to learn and their quick wit make them valuable companions should one manage to obtain one of their well hidden eggs. When raised from the egg they are the most loyal of all Atquati Creatu, being especially good with children. Should you happen to gain the love of one of these magnificent Creatu, consider yourself blessed and treasure them always.

    30 million years on:

    - still furry, but fur now more sleek and water proof (like otter)
    -lost most feathers
    - webbed feet
    - longer claws
    - bigger eyes
    - wings now helping to push through water like flippers

    60 million years

    - full flippers
    - now oily thick skin, no fur or feathers
    - longer toes help grab fish and pray
    - fins
-huge eyes help see in the depths
    - longer snout with longer curved
    - tail now a rudder

Speculation on Evolutionary Divergence:
The Omni and The Cyancu

Between the Omni's mysterious origins and the Cyancu's Uldavian origins, it can be assessed that they most likely share an Ancestral Species. At some point or another, either before or after the movement to Uldavi, this species diverged into the Cyancu and the Omni.

These two species share remarkable similarities. Their facial structures, for example, both include a central forehead gem and a lack of eyes. Neither species is actually "Blind" however, despite the lack of eyes. Cyancu developed psychic capabilities, where as Omni developed echo location.  They also share similar leg strucutres, right down to the number of digits present on their paws.

It is also quite likely that an Omni's echo location relies heavily upon their ribbons, which come across as sensory organs more so then vestigial structures from their most common ancestor.  Yet, due to the divergent evolution between the two, Cyancu adapted stronger capabilities to the point of psionics. With stronger capabilities, they would have to phase out the sensory organs for something else, such as the gem-studded tentacles they have now.

Perhaps not so noticeably, the "eye" like marking in the center of an Omni's ribbon is also somewhat present in the shape of the Cyancu's many gems. Whether or not this is intentional, it does seem to align that Omni ribbons and Cyancu gems are both "conduits" for their evolved methods of seeing.

Whales can't see either, they got omni.. like things.
Like if the omni evolved from the ocean.

Subbing!

The aquatic tesuri adaptations make a lot of sense. I can see Tesuri evolution splitting further into those in the Northern Pole and Atqueen Forest respectively, with the northern ones becoming more seal-like and suited for spending a lot of time hunting underwater in frigid temperatures and the southern becoming more river otter-like and suited for living on land much of the time.

Their lore says they vanished from Scria, but I really like to imagine there are some small pockets of population left that went into hiding. Assuming the Scrian climate doesn't change too much, these would probably retain most of their appearance but become more suited for stealth hunting (or whatever adaptations allowed the stragglers to survive).

Additionally, doesn't the Cetari match the eyelessness of the Cyancu and Omni? It even has "feelers" where eyes are usually positioned like the Omni. (I now see that Halloween mentioned this already, but I'll post a visual to further illustrate)

The Cetari, for all intents & purposes, does not fall into the same category as Omni & Cyancu. Its body dimorphism does not and will not fit into the grain regarding the prior.

It's generally hard to fit any of the Shrine Species into the usual dimorphism, but at best the Cetari look like they might be some form of whale. Normal animals DO exist in the Rescreatu Setting, as we have seen with whale bath toys and such. There'd be more of an argument for the Cetari divergence if it was more "dog" shaped then "whale" shaped.

Delila, how are you seeing the Cetari as dog-like? Genuinely curious! I have always seen a whale when I look at it. Very pretty creatu.

Lilith; You may want to re-read my statement! ^^; I said it was not dog shaped (like Omnis & Cyancu) and more whale shaped!

This got me thinking about the evolution of our real world whales- coming from small four legged hoofed mammals.

I'll try and remember to draw up my little head cannon evolutionary tree that will tie all three together with the same origin- in this case a cloven hoofed, blind creatu that strong relies on its other senses

Cyancu being a branch that retrained it's hooves

Cetari branch following a very similar journey to our own whales

Omni branch following the same basic body plan as the "origin" species; slowly loosing it's hooves but keeping it's two toes

Speaking of four legged hoofed animals, the Kioka also seems like it could be related to these fellas for a few reasons:
1. Two toes per foot
2. Protrusions/appendages with unique properties (could be sensory or related to levitation - the Kioka lore states that their exact purpose is unknown)
(Side note: The fact that Kioka have eyes could mean that at one point this evolutionary line had them and they were "phased out" so to speak, or that the Kioka evolved them afterwards, which doesn't seem as far-fetched when you consider eyes have independently evolved many times over the course of evolutionary history because they're just that handy to have around.)
3. Mouth "hidden" - I noticed that, even when viewed from different angles with different effects and OAKs, the Omni and Kioka seem to lack a visible mouth. The Cyancu's mouth appears hidden in the adult stage, but of course we can see in the adolescent stage that what's really under there is a round mouth that resembles a lamprey's. However...
From the Cyancu lore page:
"the only real evidence of a Cyancu feeding is a very small Y-shaped mark where the mouth was placed"
I googled lamprey bites so you don't have to, and they certainly don't look like a Y-shape, which could mean that the resemblance to a lamprey is superficial and not because they have a similar way of feeding or bone structure. So my question is, what if Omni and Kioka also have a weird mouth like the Cyancu? Not necessarily a lamprey-lookalike, but something unexpected and different at the very least.
Furthermore...
We can kinda see what looks like a masseter muscle on the undead form, which could rule out a lamprey mouth (or whatever the Cyancu has going on), but it doesn't exactly look like most typical mammalian mouths either - the lower jaw is really slender, and the top seems to have a spot where you'd expect incisors to be, but no incisors (unless those grooves under the nasal opening are them). Not exactly suited for tearing apart prey or chewing on vegetation. Seeing as their mouth is so tiny it's hidden, they seem like they'd have trouble catching anything with it, so probably not insectivores then. (Actually, what do they eat, anyway? So many questions.) Apart from insectivores, guess who else has weirdly dainty jaws and small teeth (or even no teeth at all)?
Yup, whales.

:o you guys have put so much thought into this!!
I love it.
The thought of Omni and kioka having mouths like the cyancu (even if it's not exactly the same) is quite frankly terrifying and I'm here for it
