As Summer slung her backpack over her shoulder, she knew she was going to be late.  Nothing good was going to come of this.  Ms. Dowry would only butcher her with harsh words and then send her off to her seat.  Not a good way to start the first day of school.
How could she oversleep?  She had never been late to school and had a perfect attendance rate.  If something went wrong now, it would be all her fault and she'd brand herself as a failure.  Failure was not an option.
Running full speed, her home wasn't too far away from Maple High School, though she still had a good walk's distance at the same time.  Her backpack bounced up and down uncomfortably, and she put on the other strap and it still did so.  The contents would be shaken, but that was less of a worry.  Bursting through the front doors only two minutes after the first bell that signalled the entry time - so she still had about eight minutes until she had to be in class - Summer accidentally bumped into someone.
"Oh my gosh, I'm sooo sorry.  I..  It's just that.."
She looked up at the boy and didn't recognize him from last year.  He must be new or maybe she didn't pay attention enough.  Sometimes she lost her train of thought and could be sort of forgetful, so she always had an agenda to keep track of things.  Her school record she wanted to keep clean, however hard it was for her.
The boy had another person with him that was male, too.  Summer didn't recognize the other either.  "I-I'm sorry to bother you..."

Summer frowned and went on her way.  They clearly didn't mind too much and probably wouldn't care about a girl they'd never seen before in their life.  A bit dejected, she wondered why she even had her hopes up that they would say something more.  Maybe it was just that she wanted a friend.  Everything had went awry at the end of last year, leaving her with nobody when her best friend turned on her...
Anyways, she decided that it would be best if she was just on her own way.
Looking on the paper she had trimmed and taped the the inside cover of her agenda, Summer saw her first class was Science.  Figuring out her locker easily, she used the combo given to her on a slip of paper.  It opened with a 'click'  and she put her backpack on the hook, her textbooks and accordian folder on the bottom, notebooks on the top.  She left out the notebook that Summer decided would be her Science notebook and took her textbook for Science and of course her accordian folder and trusty agenda.  Of course, a pencil was also brought along.
Shutting the locker, Summer couldn't help but see the two boys again.  Her gaze soon shifted towards the door to her class as she looked up at the clock.  4 more minutes.
Would they need help getting to class?  Summer couldn't help but wonder.
Taking a seat near the back on one of the large desks and depositing her things, she let the thought go and scribbled down a few notes in her agenda.  The Science teacher was Mr. Ulyse, and he was pretty lenient on things except when it came to lab experiments.  Summer wondered what was going to happen today in Science - an experiment to kick off the school year, or a boring explanation of school rules?

Mr. Ulyse smiled and nodded as the bell rang shortly after.  "Ahh, and you must be Mr. Ashford.  How about you take a seat next to Summer there, hmm?"  he said, motioning to the only seat left.  Summer didn't speak.  Her eyes only widened slightly, especially when she heard some girls talking about him already.  How typical.
"Now, class..." Mr. Ulyse started.  "We'll be doing a special lab here in the beginning of the year-"
Yes! Summer thought joyously.
"-and you will be partnered with the person you are sitting by."
Now that was the downside.  Of course there was a downside.  I guess it isn't too bad... Summer thought, trying to keep her spirits up.  Maybe I'll actually meet someone decent this year and I'll have a friend.
She shifted her supplies around a bit to make room as Mr. Ulyse was about to get into the details of the lab.  Her notebook out, she was ready to write it down so she wouldn't forget.

Deciding to be friendly, she whispered, "My name's Summer... What's your name?"
Knowing that this may or may not turn out well - seeing as the first encounter they had was her running into him - Summer didn't get her hopes up.
"...and then you will put the filter into the funnel which is on the beaker, and the sand, salt and water mixture gets poured onto..." Mr. Ulyse continued, though she was only half-listening.  However her notes were still being written, almost automatically.  It was something she viewed as a necessity.  Note-taking was something to help her remember things and so was writing in her agenda, and sometimes she even wrote things on her hand.

Finishing his explanation,  Mr. Ulyse smiled.  "Now, I know this is a lot of information to process, so I've written it all up on the board."  He motioned to the huge whiteboard behind him.  So Summer had been taking notes for nothing.  Well, maybe not nothing, but still.  She could've spared the writing.
"Time to get started!  All supplies are at your tables.  Don't forget your safety goggles!" the teacher finished.
Summer stuck on her goggles and handed Lancelot a pair.  "It's nice to meet you, too, Lancelot."  She took the petri dish with sand and the petri dish with salt in it along with a small beaker.  "First, we have to mix these two together in this beaker... Do you want to do it or I?"
