The rest of the party had gone by quickly, mostly because Kimi kept to herself most of the time, flashing an occasional smile and shaking a few hands of the other guests. She had walked throughout the house, her drink in hand as she observed everyone. No thought had really come to mind, she was really blanking out the whole time, her experience with her ex mother-in-law still replaying in her head. Now she was looking at some of the pictures that Lance had on the shelves in the living room. Kimi felt like she was intruding but she couldn't help but look at the family photos. They contained history about his family, the family that had once been her family as well. She sighed and took another sip of her soda, feeling like she was about to get a headache.

Finally, I had found Kimi. As I walked to the living room, I could feel my heart both stop and drop at the same time - just by seeing her. I smiled, tried composing myself a bit with her back towards me, and walked forward.
"Hey."
I said while pushing my glasses up my nose. Sometimes I felt like such a nerd. Ha. If only Kimi knew that I'd be getting contacts soon. I know this was wrong but I was only going to wear them to see how she'd respond. Maybe even like how I looked...
I shook the thoughts away, reminding myself that this was my brothers ex - wife. I needed to get my head out of the clouds.
"How are you?"
I asked, remembering the scene she had with my mother.

Kimi was a bit startled as Lance called her. She turned around to face him and smiled, holding her cup with two hands now. "Hey, Lance! Oh.. I'm fine. I mean I didn't expect to break down in tears today but I guess holding it in isn't very healthy" she joked gently, laughing lightly and smiling. You could tell that she had recovered a bit from earlier, her thoughts more sorted out and her eyes were shining with a bit of happiness. "Did you open your presents?" she asked finally, hoping that he hadn't opened her present without her. Kimi looked at Lance more closely. It was a little hard to believe that Richard and Lance were brothers, but only because of how different they were from each other. They were complete opposites. She blinked twice, waiting for his answer with an obvious interest in his reply.

I smiled at her response, glad too know she wasn't still upset. I walked a little closer to keep the conversation less awkward. With a small laugh, I responded,
"Actually, no. I usually open them when everyone leaves, since the party is a bit crowded every year."
I shrugged and sat down on the sofa, and patted the spot next to me for her to sit down.
"Why?"

Kimi let out a sigh of relief and her eyes sparkled with a bit of excitement. She took his invitation and sat down next to him on the couch, crossing her legs and fixing her dress, which was a little too revealing now that she actually thought about it. "Well because I want you to open my gift first! Not that I'm more special than anyone else.. I just think that my gift is the most important" she laughed, knowing that her explanation was horrible. She opened her mouth to say something but quickly decided against it, knowing that she would just be rambling on and on about something that had no relation to the topic.

I tried to ignore how elated I felt around her, as she sat down. With a smile, I said, "Trust me. Yours is the most important." I wouldn't dare say what I was thinking. That she was the most important. I got up from the sofa and made my way to the present table. After finding the one with her name on it, I sat back down next to her and opened the card. On the inside, my heart was pumping so loudly I was waiting to hear her ask if I was alright. My hands became hot and sweaty as my eyes quickly scanned over the words, not able to fully comprehend them with how nervous I became. I cleared my throat and smiled at her, brightly. Before slowly unwrapping the gift. Why was I so timid all of a sudden? As I pulled out the gift, I, surprisingly, truly smiled with excitement for another reason other then being around her. "A laptop?" I said elatedly as I looked back at her. "Thanks Kimi, but..." I frowned, realizing something, "How much did you pay for it?"

Kimi watched his every move, excitement bubbling up inside her. She couldn't wait to see the ex
pression on his face when he opened his gift. When he read the card she felt a little confused, he looked kind of shocked maybe? When he smiled at her she just smiled back, feeling extremely relieved. Then when he opened the gift, she spotted the frown and sighed. "It doesn't matter, Lance. It's your birthday, I don't care how much I spent" she added more softly, telling him the complete truth. A gift was a gift, she wasn't going to worry about spending on him or anyone else. Especially Lance, he deserved it!

Kimi sighed deeply. She didn't expect Lance to react this way. She stayed quite for awhile, trying to determine if he was just bluffing it or not. He couldn't be serious.... could he? "It was $1,000... happy now?" She asked with a sarcastic smile, though she was joking and she ended up laughing afterwards. "Honestly, Lance, what's the big deal? It's your birthday and you deserve the best so I got it for you." Kimi told him more softly, her eyes reflecting her gratitude for him. "Just enjoy it or I'll freak out" she joked.

"A thousand?" I asked, a bit shocked, and my eyebrows lifted. "Kimi..." I said, shaking my head. I had promised I'd keep it if she told me the price. But, still... A thousand was a bit ridiculous. "The big deal is, 1,000 dollars is a lot of money."
I couldn't help but smile down at the laptop, inwardly thrilled about having it.
"Especially, just for someone's birthday. I've had 28 of those."

Kimi sighed. "Oh, Lance.. Just enjoy it, for me alright? I don't see it as a big deal, but hey, next time I'll keep tabs on how much I spend, deal?" she asks, her eyes shining with amusement. "Now, surely this isn't going to be the end of your birthday... we've got to do something!" she exclaimed, feeling all excited now. "You did plan a sort of thing to do after the party, right?" she asked, just in case she was the only one who knew what she was talking about.

"Uh..." I shrugged, confused at what Kimi was talking about. I never did like doing a big deal for my birthday, mostly because when I was in high school, I didn't have many friends, so a 'big deal' wasn't even possible with only one or two friends. "Actually, no. The party was the plan. What else would their be?"

Kimi raised an eyebrow, he surely couldn't be that boring. "Well I kind of... reserved seats at this wonderful restaurant... Y'know, 'cause I can" she grinned, knowing that he would be shocked at this news. Kimi was always one who seemed to be a step ahead of everyone, but it Lance declined, she didn't know what she would do about it.

"Oh... Y'know.... Chrel's ..." Chrel's was a fancy place, but it was affordable and she knew that Lance couldn't argue with her on that. "Do you wanna go? It's my gift to you!" she added, just in case he would decline. It would be only her second time going there, the first time had been simply amazing. Kimi sat there with her puppy dogs eyes, waiting for his answer.

I sighed, wondering if I should take the gift. Kimi just got a divorce, bought me a laptop, and is now taking me to the nicest restaurant around?
"Only if you can afford... All of it."
I said, defeated at knowing she was willing too.
