Krael blinked once. So this wolf had been listening to him the whole time?

"Used to be?" The black wolf inquired when Zavi mentioned her pack. Or rather, her former pack. "And what are you now?"

It took Krael a few minutes for the stranger's last comment to sink in. When it did, he instinctively curled his lips back to reveal pointed teeth. "You mentioned I sounded tired, yes?" he growled as he felt anger rise in him.

"That may be, but do not make the mistake of assuming I am too tired to take you on, mongrel. You would do well to watch what you say."

"Heh, my pack doesn't know I've left, and you and I are still on their territory. I can still fight, I haven't been blundering around, I've been resting. Taking you on would be easy," Zavi snarled contemptiously. "But lucky for you, I'm not looking for a fight. I need to get out of here," Zavi noted, glancing around.

"Just so you know, I'm the daughter of Pack Seven's alpha," Zavi called over her shoulder as she turned, heading back into the storm.

Krael glared, hatred in his eyes.

"Don't be so sure," he muttered in reply to her comment about being able to best him in a fight.

He watched the retreating figure of the white wolf as she slowly disappeared into the swirling flurries of snow.

Well that was short lived, he thought. That's just as well. Any longer trying to talk to someone and I'd likely fall asleep.

So thinking, Krael set off to try and find a suitable temporary den to rest in until morning.

Zavi cursed, and turned around. Had she really expected the other wolf to follow her? She began to retrace her pawprints, which were already covered in a light dusting of snow. Reaching the clearing, Zavi stuck her nose in the snow, until she found one of Krael's tracks. She snorted slighty at the sight of it, but then she took another look. The track was beautifully shaped, she could tell how big the loner must be, because next to her print, the track looked huge.

Zavi sat and admired the print for a little while longer, before standing and following the path he'd took. After a few minutes' time of tracking, Zavi noticed the tracks were beginning to look staggered, as if the the other wolf was giving into exhaustion. For some reason, Zavi felt a slight tinge of worry for the loner.

She shook her head, Why should I be worried about him? Zavi growled to herself, before plodding on through the storm. He's a loner.

But so were you, when your mother was still alive, taunted the voice in the back of Zavi's head, that she hadn't heard in over a year.

"Go away, I don't need you!" Zavi muttered, the snow now coming down thicker than ever.

((So sorry I haven't been posting. :c
And thank you for bumping <3))

Krael stumbled through the cold white powder, eyelids feeling heavy even as he walked. His legs felt weak and slow, nearly unresponsive, and he willed them to keep moving for just a little while longer until he could find a proper shelter. Thankfully, he happened upon a suitable den half-buried in the snow after just a few minutes of searching. Krael was both surprised and worried at how quickly exhaustion had overcome him.

He was far too tired to check out the den for any inhabitants or other reasons why he shouldn't claim it as his own. Instead, Krael flopped to the floor with a muffled thud as soon as he made it all the way inside. Giving into exhaustion, the black wolf curled up into a tight little ball against the cold, then closed his eyes. As he began to slip away into a fitful sleep, Krael found his sluggish mind fretting over the wolf he had run into earlier. Was she really who she said she was, daughter of an alpha? It had been a while since Krael had any reason to pay attention to the hierarchies of packs, but alphas and their pups had always been of extreme importance.

Shame I'll probably never see her again, Krael thought, just before he fell asleep.

Cold-induced shivers racked his slender frame as he slept, dreaming of the fae and her pack.

((It's fine, I just figured you were busy.))

The loner's scent was stronger now, Zavi could now pick up the trail on the pine boughs around her. After a short distance, the tracks seemed to end at the mouth of some sort of den. Zavi couldn't tell what animal it belonged to, but she had the distinct impression it was probably on old badger hole.

Shifting her weight onto her front paws, Zavi crept lightly forward, and sniffed the den entrance. Pulling back she rammed her ears forward, listening. She had discerned fom scent that the black wolf was in there, but how far back she wasn't sure. If he's even alive, Zavi thought grimly, remebering the staggered tracks.

But Zavi thought she could hear breathing from inside the badger set. Satisfied, she turned to observe the dark forest, she spotted some pine trees that had grown close enough together to form a little, sheltered space just beneath the lowest branches.

Perfect, Zavi thought, before padding over to the trees. Wriggling, she carefully worked her way under the prickly branches, until she could lie down on the soft bed of fallen pine needles.

Yawning, Zavi curled her tail over her hind feet, and rested her head on her heels. Tomorrow, she would continue north, and hopefully leave her former pack's territory. And just maybe, she might brave another meeting with the loner.

((Time skip?))

((Yeah. I'm still really busy so sorry in advance if I continue to procrastinate. Btw, I'm posting from my phone for the first time and I don't know if it works well with the forums on res. Dont be surprised if the format ends up really weird.
And yes, time skip sounds good.))

Cold. Shaking uncontrollably as the bitterly cold, unrelenting wind whipped flurries of snow every which way. A wolf baying sorrowfully in the distance.  Trying to answer but finding himself unable. He could only just hear it from his position in-

Where was he again? His mind was too fuzzy to make sense of it, like he was in some sort of trance. A zombie.

Dark. Everything was unnaturally dark. Casting his silver eyes about, he found himself in a forest. A forest where no moonlight shone. Perhaps, he mused,  the moon was too afraid to shine. The forest was foreboding enough that that seemed a distinct possibility

...Forest. How could that be? Wasn't he just... somewhere else? For some reason, he couldnt quite recall anymore. Not that it mattered. All that mattered now was the wolf that had howled. He knew it was her. He knew he needed to find her.

Running, running quickly. Still cold, still dark. Still need to find her.

He felt light and carefree, while simultaneously a great sense of urgency nagged at him as he flew across the snowy ground on silent paws. He hadn't noticed before, but evil looking yellow eyes were leering at him from the bushes. It didn't matter. As long as they didn't get in the way of him finding-

Wait. There she was. The white wolf from earlier! Her pelt seemed to glow even under a sunless, moonless sky. She looked at him. A long, hard stare that left him unable to avert his eyes. 'I know you,' she seemed to say, though she did not utter a single word aloud.

She began to turn around. 'Wait!' he shouted in protest, and she turned back. There was a questioning look in those green eyes of hers.

'We will meet again soon.' she said, out loud this time. He felt himself shudder. Who was she? He opened his mouth to say something, and then the white wolf was gone. Vanished like some ghostly apparition.

'...Don't go,' he pleaded, but it was too late.

---

In his sleep, Krael whined softly, but did not stir. He had been having such dreams ever since he had first been captured by the clutches of sleep.

Soon, the growing hunger in his belly would wake the black wolf, but for now Krael remained asleep.

((Lol fail. Krael did exactly nothing in that post. He didn't even get up xD))

((Okay, if your busy, please don't feel like you have to post, I don't mind waiting at all.))

At first Zavi thought she was dreaming, but then she realized the wolf howling from what seemed to be a great distance away, was not just a figment of her imagination. What was worse, she recognized it. Damn, Duna certainly didn't waste any time, Zavi thought, her stomach dropping in her anxiety. If a pack wolf was missing for a minimum of twelve hours, they were to be considered a loner, unless found captured or otherwise in a similar situation, and loners on pack territory were supposed to be hunted down and killed. Zavi was way outside the twelve hour limit, and Duna had obviously picked up her trail.

Several answering howls followed the first. Zavi, now fully awake, took a few minutes to gather herself and take in her surroundings. There was a cold grey light shining through the pine branches, the light that procedes dawn and dusk. It had stopped snowing, and thankfully, the loner's tracks and Zavi's own had been covered.

The loner! He of course, wouldn't understand what the howls meant, and might head towards them, as Zavi assumed, he had been doing before. She had two options, flee for her life emediately, or stay and wake the loner, with the hope he didn't bite her head off, and was strong enough to travel. She settled on the latter.

Groaning slightly, her sore muscles screaming in protest, Zavi slipped carefully fom under the pine boughs, and began to pick her way over to the old badger set. She sucked in her breath, and ducked inside.

((Heehee, I think he'll have to do something now.))

((I found that a good time to post is at night from my bed. It works well. I'm glad I found out I could post from my phone. Unfortunately this means only one post a day. Better than nothing, I suppose.))

Falling. Falling from a great height, hurtling towards the ground at dizzying speeds. And yet all he could focus on was the image of the white wolf, ingrained in his memory. Perhaps he knew he was safe, he was not nearly as panicked as one might expect given that he was falling to what was sure to be his death.

He struggled to remember every detail of the mysterious female, but the mental picture was quickly becoming blurred, almost past the point of recognition. The lack of clarity reminded him of the countless times he had woken from a long sleep and vaguely comprehended that his mind had been wandering. His memory of his brief encounters with the she-wolf were no better to him than a half-remembered dream, the exact details dancing just out of reach at the edges of his mi-

Half-remembered dream.

Dream.

Sleeping.

I have to wake up, I have to find-

---

"H-hello," Krael stammered, doing a poor job of hiding his surprise at seeing the she-wolf standing right in front of him. Had she been watching him sleep?

Regaining his composure, Krael sneered derisively at her. "Didn't think I'd see you again so soon. You see, I was under the impression you were too good for me, being daughter of the alpha and all."

As he spoke, the wolf's parting words from his dream (...or had that been real?) echoed in his mind.

'We will meet again soon,'  she had said. Dream or not, she had not lied.

Zavi was regarding the black wolf with mild amusement. She had watched him twitch and whimper in his sleep until she'd prodded him cautiously with her paw. Whatever he'd been dreaming about, it hardly looked like he'd been having a good time. Between his startled reply and the way his silver eyes seemed to hold an almost guilty light, she figured his cool composure wasn't much more than a mask he was wearing over his true emotions.

But she was wasting time, Duna and her hunting party would be fully rested, and with a trail to follow, it wouldn't take them long to stumble across this place.

"Look," Zavi snapped coldly. "I don't think you heard those howls a few moments ago, because you were sleeping, but they're a hunting party, they'll be looking for me, and if they find you, they'll tear you to shreds," she said briskly. "I know you're probably still tired, but if you value your life, you've got to move," Zavi murmured gently.

Then Zavi did something that surprised even herself, she reached out slowly with her muzzle, and licked the black wolf's ear. She drew back quickly, but added: "We'll be safer if we stick together, but it's your call."

Without a backwards glance, Zavi backed out of the den. She shook herself and gave her soulder a couple quick licks. She wasn't sure why she'd reached out to the loner, but she just couldn't push away her curiosity about the black wolf. Who is he?

Krael stood up, his mind reeling as he tried to make sense of what the white wolf was saying.

Hunting party. Tear him to shreds. Got to move. Stick together. But why?

He racked his tired brain for explanations. So this wolf was on the run from a hunting party and wanted him to come with her. Why would she be running in the first place? Had she really done something so awful that someone had sent a hunting party after her? What if she had killed someone and all this was just a ploy to get Krael to trust her so that she could kill him too? But that didn't make sense- she would have done away with him already if that were the case.

Krael's train of thought came to a screeching halt as the other wolf reached out and... Licked him? He flinched away so hard that he had to take a step back to avoid falling over. Krael had become so accustomed to being completely alone with no contact with any of his kind, and now a complete stranger had licked him. His ear seemed to tingle where the female's tongue had come in contact with it.

He stood rooted to the spot for a long moment before he forced his legs to move again and he staggered forward in pursuit of the female.

Zavi turned and blinked at the loner in surprise, she hadn't really expected him to follow her. "Well surprise, surprise," she murmured, giving him a long, searching look. "You coming?"

Taking in the ex
pression on his face she added, "really now, what reason would I have to hurt you? I'm the one being hunted!" There was a touch of a snarl in Zavi's voice, and her eyes were cold as she spoke, as if daring the loner to question her. "I'm assuming you haven't been living in Pack Seven's territory, I know loners live higher up the in the moutains.... Is it safe to hide there?" Zavi asked, with a note of pleaing in her voice. Another, much closer howl had just split the silence between the two wolves.

Zavi glanced around, and whimpered. The third howl, to her, had been like a death sentence. Abandoning all hope of working out a plan with the wolf in front of her, she turned tail and bolted in the trees behind her. She had one thought in her head: I've got to get out of here!

((Oh wow, fail on my part XD))

((Sorry. Late post again.))

Krael looked questioningly at the white wolf. She was talking about how she wasn't going to harm him. That was good to know, but had Krael really looked so scared that she had felt the need to reassure him? Apparently so.

Krael could clearly see the panic in the she-wolf's eyes as she asked him about the mountains. Was it safe to hide there? He guessed so. He had never thought about it, seeing as he had never been on the run before.

The word refugee knocked loosely around in Krael's mind, sending a thrill of panic through him as he vaguely comprehended all the terrible things that could mean for him. He shook his head, knowing how important it was that he stay calm and think quickly and clearly.

Yes, now that he thought about it the mountains were a perfect place to hide. Especially with me as a guide, Krael thought smugly.

It was true, though. There were many hidden dens and caves in the craggy face of the mountain. If they could make it to the top in good time, then they would be able to see their persuers coming from miles away. Not to mention the fact that it would be unfamiliar territory to the pack wolves, where as Krael knew the mountains well. He quickly told the other wolf.

He watched the fear turn to terror on the white wolf's face as the last of three piercing howls tore through the night. She turned and ran, and Krael did not know if she was aware she was going towards the mountains or not.

After a moment's hesitation, Krael turned and sprinted after her. Being a fairly good runner, he caught up quickly. Running side by side, the pair wove around trees and dodged low hanging branches.

"Name's Krael," the loner said. "And you'd best listen to me if you want to get out of this alive."

(('Tis fine.))

Zavi slowed her pace, panting and shaking from fear and exhaustion. She hadn't been asleep very long, and she was still quite tired. She looked at the loner, and decided right then and there that she would push away any doubts she had, and listen to him. "Alright then. My name is Zavi. If you can get us the heck out of here alive, then maybe I'll reconsider my thoughts about you," Zavi dipped her head, flicking an ear nervously. She still wasn't sure how she really felt about the loner.

Looking around, Zavi could tell the sun was well on its way up. With a slight pang of guilt and embarrassment, she realized that as she'd been running, she'd been going in the opposite direction of the mountains. She shrugged off these thoughts however, she needed to work with Krael if the outcome of this was going to come off in their favor.

"So, I guess you'd better lead the way then," Zavi sighed, a hint of a growl in her voice. She hated when others had to lead her around, it made her feel helpless.

((Fail post xD))

((The autocorrect on my phone wants to change "Zavi" to "Saviour". I thought that was interesting.))

"And what thoughts would those be?" Krael growled as he ran. Realizing how he sounded, he quickly added "Er, not that it matters. I couldn't care less what you think of me."

It occurred to Krael that he sounded like an utter fool. Oh well.

Krael continued to run alongside the white wolf. As he did so, he was secretly very grateful when Zavi slowed a little. He pretended not to notice though, subtly slowing down to match the new pace. Instantly, he felt a modicum of relief as the burning in his muscles lessened. He would rather have stopped completely, but that just wasn't an option right now. Besides, what would Zavi think? Apparently, she already had 'thoughts' about him, and from the sound of things, they weren't too good.

Krael listened with a deep sense of satisfaction as Zavi told him to lead the way. Being the self-centered creature he was, Krael was loving every minute of this. For the time being, he was in control.

"Mm. Alright then." he said, clearly quite pleased with himself. He turned around and began to trot back the way they came.

"Mountains are this way."
