With a gizzard full of joy,
We fly high,
With nothing to chase us,
Our spirit flies by.

Feel the wind in your feathers,
As you go fly free,
Away from the Darkness,
Away from the Shadows,
Like a mourning dove you'll be.

She opened her eyes for the first time, gasping at the scenery around her. The sky high had a pinkish tint to it, and the sun was setting along the horizon. All sorts of doves flew past, cooing their way to their own nests to care for their young. Mother Nature's breath blew gently, making the leaves of the trees dance gracefully.

She turned her head and saw some other chicks near by. They were covered with white down, and played happily among the twiggy nest. They all flapped their down covered wings, and peeped at each other. The young chick watched them, wanting to play their game. "I bet you can't catch me, Takeek!" one of the young females chirped. "I can too!" the other replied. They started playfully pecking each other, creating quite a racket.

"That's enough, you three." a fourth voice entered the scene. She turned her head the other way, and saw a much taller dove. Pure white feathers all over, with a pink beak and legs. She had ice blue eyes, full of tenderness and care. The young chick immediately recognized her, even though this was the first time she had ever seen the world with her own eyes. "Ma-ma?" she peeped.

The adult female turned her head and spotted the broken eggshells, and looked up even further and spotted the little chick. "Good gluff," she gasped. "Tyro! Get your tail feathers over here, it hatched!" she shouted out into the open. It didn't take along for another dove to enter the scene. He was larger than the chick's mother, and had more broad muscles. "It's a girl..." he murmured.

The whole family gathered around the newly hatched chick. "Mommy! She's beautiful!" one of the female chick exclaimed. "Yes, she is Arienna." the mother replied. A small male chick peeped his way through, "She looks like a fluff ball." he whispered to his other brother. "You all were," the father snapped. "Look at her eyes, Tyro! They are a wonderful bright green, but also dark, like ivy." the mother smiled. "Can I name her mommy?" the daughter asked. "Of course,"

The small chick stepped up slowly to the hatch-ling. The newly hatched chick began trembling in fear. It kept letting out small chirps, not sure of what was going on. "Hi there, I'm Arienna, your sister." she said in a real calm voice. The chick began to calm down, "Ar... Aree... Arienna?" she pronounced slowly. "Yes, you have such a beautiful voice. You could've been mistaken for a song bird if it weren't for your pure white down." Arienna smiled. "And such beautiful eyes."

The chick tilted her head, "Song...song?". The small chick blinked, then began to chirp. "She's singing the Mourning Song!" her mother gasped, laying her head down on her mate's wing. "Such a beautiful peep!"

"Your name should be... Dawn, because your first chirps were of the Mourning Song, and it brings out the beautiful sun, that dawns in the sky. And also because you hatched in the beautiful dawning mourning." Arienna smiled, tilting her head up high, proud of her reasoning of naming her new sister.

"That is a beautiful name, for such a beautiful chick." their father smiled. "Welcome to the Nest, Dawn. Your home." "Awww, pa-pa, why couldn't I name her?" Takeek asked. "What would you have named her?" Takeek thought for a moment. "Ivi... because her eyes are green." "Dawn Ivi Skyharp," her mother smiled, "A wonderful addition to the Skyharp family."

"We must tell the others," Tyro said, picking up the small chick in his beak. He walked to the edge of the Nest, and so did the mother and the three chicks. The mother let out a caw, and every dove in their flock stopped what they were doing and looked. "We have a new daughter!" the mother chirped. "Princess Dawn!" she announced.

The flock let out a great big cheer. "Princess Dawn, Princess Dawn!" they cheered. Dawn looked at everyone and everything, 'What's going on?' she thought. 'Where am I?' she kept thinking, because she knew no other word to describe anything.

She turned her head and looked up at her mother. "Ma-ma?" she chirped. Her mother smiled and took her from the father's beak. "It is time to feed you." she said, and flew her back to the Nest bed. The rest of the family though, continued to stand there at the edge of the Nest, observing the cheering of the doves in their flock.

Several weeks has past, almost a full month now. The young dove, Dawn, was happily chasing her sister and brothers around. Everybody was chirping and squawking, chasing each other and flapping their wings. Her two brothers flapped their wings and glided up to a high perch.

Dawn skidded to  halt. "Takeek, Kry, that's not fair! You know I can't really fly yet!" she squawked. "Sure it is!" Takeek replied, sticking his tongue out. Kry cuffed Takeek gently on the back of his head with his wing. "Stop being such a Twitter Brain," he smiled. "What?"

The young dove puffed up her downy feathers, trying to appear threatening. "Nice, sis." Kry shook his head. Dawn frowned and stared at the ground, shuffling her wait onto her tiny feet. 'If I could only fly...' she thought.

Arienna sighed and walked up to her younger sister, "Don't mind them, their heads are just full of fluff." she said, nudging Dawn gently in the side. Dawn looked up at her and smiled, "Thanks Airenna..." Her sister nodded and fluttered up to the two male doves, cuffing them both upside their heads. "Stop teasing Dawn and get down from here." she growled.

Her brothers didn't obey, but when she gave a threatening hiss, they quickly glided down. They walked to their youngest sibling and tilted their heads. "When will you be able to fly?" Takeek asked, adjusting his wings.

Dawn shrugged, "Mama says soon." she replied. Kry walked around Dawn, circling her, "You sure? You might be eaten by raccoons by then." he chuckled. "Kry..." Arienna hissed. "Whaaat? You think those raccoons are herbivores?" Kry glared at her.

"Doesn't mean you should be scaring little Dawn," a male voice objected. The four doves turned around and saw their mother and father standing at the edge of the hollow. "Daddy!" Dawn smiled and rushed to her father. "Are raccoons going to eat me?" she asked, hugging her father's leg.

Tyro chuckled and picked her up. "Of course not, Princess. We're are all here to protect you, your family and the whole flock." he cooed, nudging her under her head. Dawn smiled and playfully nipped at his neck feathers, her way of sign language to tell them that she was hungry.

Her father chuckled again and put her down. "You're in luck then, all of you. Your mother has food for you." he said and backed away, letting his mate walk up to them.

"I can get my own food," Kry muttered, fluttering around the nest. "We know you can, son. that's why we're not going to give you and Arienna any." the mother said, gathering the two younger ones.

She fed them until their little bellies were full, then she let them play around and run some more. Every time Takeek fluttered up to a branch, Dawn moaned and stood there, waiting for him to come down so she can catch him. Her mother chuckled, "Just think dawn, a few more months of molting your down and you can go up there with him."

Dawn nodded, and snuggled herself under her mother's wing. "I'm trying to wait patiently," she replied, rubbing her head against Myria's feathers. "I know chick-a-dee, I know." her mother replied.

There was a flap of wings, and then royal family turned around to see a messenger dove. "What is it this time?" Tyro asked. "The Ravens, they are invading again." the messenger dove replied. "Again? No," Tyro sighed. "Myria, stay here with the children." he said, flying out of the nest.

"I can take them! Let me at them, I want to help dad!" Takeek said, hopping back and forth. "Those Ravens will tear you apart, little bro." Kry muttered. "Your brother is right, Takeek. You are not ready to battle them." Myria replied.

"Mama, what's going on?" Dawn asked, shivering with fright. "Our Flock is being attacked," her mother replied, staring out in the sky. She could already see a large group of them heading this way. "Hopefully Tyro will be alright."

Kry smirked, but secretly. 'If dad dies, then I become king.' he thought. He made sure that the others weren't paying attention to him, then flew away from the back of the nest. He soared through the sky, and flapped under the tree's branches. He began to get closer to the invading mob of Ravens.

Tyro and his flock army scowled, "They have a bigger flock army now. We need to be careful when driving them away." he said to his army. "Yes sir!" the flock replied. Soon, the two flock armies engaged in combat. Claws and talons against claws and talons, beaks against beaks, white against black.

Dawn watched all of this, and spotted a quite a few Ravens flying away from the flock army, and heading towards the Nests. She gasped, "Mama! They're coming!" she cried. Myria squinted her eyes and pushed dawn and Takeek into Arienna's wings. "You and Kry look after them, please." she said, before realizing that her oldest son was gone. "KRY?!"

The Ravens began to enter some of the Dove's nests, attacking the Dove families and flying and invading other ones. Myria dashed out of their Nest and started attacking the Ravens, along with some of the Dove Guards.

Everywhere that Dawn looked, there was fighting against Doves and Ravens. She cried and buried her face into Arienna's feathers. "I'm scared," she sobbed. Arienna patted her and Takeek on the back, "I am too,"

Kry attacked some of the ravens, making them plummet to the ground. He turned around and saw his father being scratched and pecked. Most of the Flock Army was gone, and only Tyro, Kry, and a few more soldiers remained. The Ravens outnumbered them.

He flew to his dad and pulled some of the Ravens away, "Dad!" he called out. Tyro looked up and saw his son, "Kry?! I thought I told you to stay with the others in our Nest!" he cawed, kicking a Raven away. Tyro pushed Kry towards the Nests, and saw that they were also being attacked by Ravens. "Good gluff!" he cursed and dashed towards the Nests. some of the Ravens followed him.

Dawn saw as the large black birds landed in their Nest. She peeped as the Ravens started attacking Arienna, who was trying to protect the two dove chicks. "Leave!" she growled. The Ravens chuckled and cawed, pushing and scratching and pecking her.

Dawn backed up, trying to not get hit by flying feathers. A raven cawed from above her, startling her. She fell out of the side of the nest.

"AREINNA!!!!" she screamed. She tried to flap her wings, but she didn't have any of her Flight Feathers. She kept chirping, but continued to fall to the ground. She plummeted quickly into a large and deep river stream.

She heard the fight above, the caws, the screams, the thuds of Doves and Ravens falling to the ground. She opened her beak to call to her family, but instead, water entered her lounges and she couldn't breath. She closed her eyes, and the world faded to black.

Kry flew to his father, bumping into him hard and into a group of Ravens. "What are you doing Kry?" Tryo asked, trying to push his way to the Nest. "Helping," Kry replied. "You're not helping, attack these Ravens!" his father commanded. "No,"

his father turned around and eyes him, "What?" The Ravens stopped attacking and watched. "I said no," Kry smiled. He clawed and scratched tyro's chest, leaving a deep slanted mark. Tyro screamed, "What is wrong with you son? Who's side are you on?" he asked. "My own."

He attacked his father, tearing off his beak, and ripping off some of his feathers. his father screamed, lost control of himself and fell to the ground, bleeding heavily from his beak being ripped off.

The Ravens watched him fall, then cheered. "King is dead, king is dead!" they chanted. "Trader killed King!" Kry squinted his eyes and turned around to the Ravens. "Your turn now," he grinned, and let out a loud caw.

Myria's wings were held up by two Ravens. "Prisoner," they chanted. "Tyro!" she screamed, "Kry! Arienna!" she cried. She tried to peck the toes of the Raven's, but they squeezed her wings tight and she screamed.

Arienna collapsed on the floor of the Nest, and Takeek trembled in the corner. The Ravens laughed, but turned their heads when Kry cawed loudly. They noticed that he was starting to attack the Ravens, and succeeding. they flew away from the Nest and into the group of Ravens.

Arienna stood up, and turned around to face Takeek. "Where's Dawn?" she asked. Takeek ran to Arienna's side, "She's gone!" he cried. Arienna widened her eyes, tears swelling up in them.

Gone.

Tyro the King of the Flock was gone.
Dawn was gone, out of the Nest.
Myria was held prisoner.
And most of the Flock Kingdom, was dead.
The Ravens, had won.
