SAI works great for me. I haven't had much experience with PS, but from what I've heard SAI is like Photoshop, but way lighter and better if you don't use all the more advanced settings and stuff that PS offers. It's simpler.

It costs around 70$ in U.S. currency, but that's an estimate because it's originally priced in Japanese yen. Lol. But I think I paid 69. In my opinion, it was well worth it.

You can download the 30 day trial for free from the site here, which is fully functional, so you can test it out and see if you like it enough to purchase. The version I linked is also in English, since the original program is Japanese.

Hope that helped?

I think OpenCanvas is free. I haven't used it before, but I've heard some other people like it. Especially for a free program.

OpenCanvas is really pretty good, but after a while I just felt it wasn't "up to snuff."

I moved onto SAI, personally, after a half-year or year with OpenCanvas. <:

This was my last "big" piece with OC:

A Piece Done in OpenCanvas

It's capable of a lot, but its tools weren't very versatile last I checked.

The plus side is that you can "paint chat" with your friends using the client, although you have to port forward using a process that can be complex and difficult for users with certain hardware.

Well it really depends on what you're talking about when you say "certain things"? You really have to look for a program that is able to do those certain things whatever they are... Sei is cool but not as good as Photoshop, and from my experience Illustrator is a pain till you get the hang of how it works.

Also, just because it's free doesn't mean GIMP isn't good. GIMP can do everything Photoshop can do and then some, plus works great whether you have a tablet or not. While Photoshop and other programs like that cost like rip and are hard to draw in unless you have a tablet. I mean yeah because it's free I was a bit skeptical myself when I first got it, but it really is great ^^
