I think, to keep users from doing the illegal and jumping accounts just because they don't like their usernames, we should have an option that allows the ONE-TIME change of a username.

This option is similar to that of the Class Changing system - we could have the option to change our username, but only ONCE. We could buy another username change in the Credit Shop for, say, 75 credits? I don't know about this last option...

In v2, I think a changed username should keep their old username in their Basic Data on their profile. It is important that everyone continue to know who the user previously was.

I'm just throwing that out there because I hate my username, and want to change it in a legal fashion. ;3

---OR---

We could to a nickname system, similar to the one Wajas employs. You sign up with an official name, but have the option of changing your display name (on forums and in SB) to a nickname. I am still uncertain about this option...

Don't like the idea of changing usernames.  I'd say it would have to be done within the first week of signing up, or the option gets lost if something like this gets implemented.

Or an application process that has it changed, with the old user name being posted to their account so users can keep track.

Really, there's no need to change your username if you were smart and picked an intelligent one.  You're bound to get called by your username on any site you pick to have an account on.

Hm, I like it all but the whole you have to pay credits, cause users wont have enough or no patience to wait to get credits or are not able and will account change anyway. But "The other option is similar to that of the Class Changing system - we could have the option to change our username, but only ONCE." <--- I like that.

I think I'll edit the top option...lemme work on it some...

EDITED. ;3

Great feedback thus far. Keep ideas coming.

Geon -  I feel it is important to leave all options open. My username, personally, does not reflect how amazing I am. I want to change it to something with only one capital, only one word, and something short/the name of one of my pets. Or something. Some people join with usernames that are spur-of-the-moment, like I did. That is unfortunate, and I just want to do something about it. Options are good. ;3

I like the idea of a username change being like the class change, but only once. Possibly twice.

I don't think it should be an item that's always available.

If it does work like the class change, I don't think the option should be available until the user has been on the site for at least 6 months. And IF people have the option to change it a second time, it shouldn't be until another 6-12 months after their first change.

This, because, screwing up your username when you first sign up is understandable. Maybe you were young or something. That permits a first change to me... and if you screw it up a second time, for whatever reason, the second change acts as a sort of safeguard, or if you want your original username back. But I think that's it. Screwing up three times is just, o__o.

And yes, once a user changes their username, it should be displayed on their profile somehow, like "Original username: Riyo" or "Previous usernames: Riyo, Tsuji" or something.

I still do not understand why everyone who has posted negative feedback/criticism of my idea thinks that only newcomers screw up/should get to change their usernames. Scissorhands and I both want username changes, and are way older than 1 week/6 months. ;/ I think this option should be fair to everyone. Hence the whole ONE-TIME-CHANGE thing.

I think that having the name change is 293847234 times better than having users switch accounts ENTIRELY. It's really starting to become a problem with people changing accounts. If we had people remember account numbers then we normally won't have to worry about usernames.

Although I do agree, if you don't like your username, then you shouldn't have picked it at the start, but I guess tastes change and people want to have their username reflect their personality.

Though I think if we were to allow name changes, then it would be a once or twice thing, as Riyo said.

Definitely just once or twice. Any more than that would get rediculus, and it would be a nice way to advise users to be responsible with their usernames. ;3

, just only for the 'Change-Your-Username-Once' idea. I don't think there should be the option for changing usernames via CS otherwise people would change their username almost daily >.>'. And it would be hard to keep track of. Especially if you searched their username in the Search, or something, and you couldn't find them. Something would go wrong, I have the feeling. D:
I hate my username too. :D Join the club!
But anyways. I also like the idea of imitating {if slightly changing?} the Wajas' system for nicknames. I mean, pretty much everyone has a nickname on this site, so it might prove useful. Although, what would be the point of having nicknames if we have usernames? On Wajas I think it's often used for advertising Cave giveaways ect, but it would sorta spam up the SB if we did that. o3o If there's going to be nicknames, it should only appear in forums, under usernames. :3
Maybe you have to buy nicknames from the CS instead? :o Iunno. It's an idea. They could cost like, 50 credits or so, and maybe 10 to change it? -shrug-
I'm done here. Good idea though, Rei, and I'm glad it's nice and limited instead of, 'LEIK, hw about u cn chang ur usrnme wenevr u want'.
:D

Just to said a user named 'Roxas' spammed the chatbox/board then later on change her username and ..
I think you get my point here.
So, disagree.

Fizzeh (horselover, for those who don't know who's behind that nickname) created a similar thread. Both thredas could be combined. ;)

Though I do like Riyo's idea (modification of Rei's idea) best about name changes becoming available like the clas s  changes, with the exception that it should not become possible to buy a forth name change from the CS shop. Changing it once or twice should be enough. :)

I do agree with the suggestion of having the first change after 6 months though, because people should know by then that they want to stay on res and might want to pick the name then which they use to take on other places in the net. As I stated somewhere else, I only picked my username carelessly, cause I didn't believe I would stay on res longer than a month but after surviving the rollback and the coming of v2 I know I won't part with res too soon and thus I regret that I didn't use another username.

Furthermore with v1 I had problems with my username, cause it was always censored to st***d. Luckily this prob vanished. But there's something else that actually bothers me. On res I noticed we have way to many people whose names contain the word star. Therefore, if more than one person enters the SB whose name contains star there's always confusion which star is meant. That's why I'd still like to change my username.

I'd like to change it to Yamuri, since it's a unique name and I'm usually use this name only in the net. One star less would decrease confusion. ;)

Well, everything I want to say has pretty much been said. x3 But I'll say that I like this idea, and that you can only change usernames once. As for the problem of keeping track of people, perhaps, everything gets changed so that when you look at your Respals, for instance, it'll be updated to the users' new username. It's pretty much their own responsibility to point out on their profiles that they've changed. Savvy?

Oh, and I like the nicknames idea, like Wajas. I hate having to remind people not to call me Wolf, it's irritating - and I don't always feel that good about it. If we had our own nicknames, then people will, hopefully, actually pay attention to them, and not h*censored*le strangers to "GO VIEW MY PROFILE FOR NICKNAMES! DD8<". Savvy again?

I'd say it would have to be done within the first week of signing up, or the option gets lost if something like this gets implemented.

Why would someone need to change their username within the first week of signing up? It was just created and they shouldn't have to change it practically the instant they sign up. Many people who created their usernames a while ago have changed and would like their username changed, like LeTainted stated, to match their personalitymore or for some other reason.

Seriously, if someone signed up when they were say, 11, and now they want to change their username because they are now older and not as fond of the username as before, what's wrong with that?

Many of those who joined didn't intend for Res to become a habitual playing site and don't put a lot of thought or care into their usernames. We should have the option to change it once.

Scams won't happen because of this because if this is implemented, the user's profile will have their former username noted on it.

I HATE my username.  I regret using numbers so much.  It makes me seem less noticeable and harder to remember.  If I could change it I would, definetly.  I fully support this idea.
