I'm not sure, I just came back from a long break. ^^; You could sell them by trading or other methods, but you can't put them in your shop anymore. (In my view, that was the main point of being a Merchant; an advantage over some lazy ranchers.)

You can't sell eggs in shops anymore because of a coding problem with eggs spoiling. If/When that is fixed, Merchants will be able to stock eggs again.
Any user, regardless of class, can have a ton of pets. Profile space is unlimited now (I think it still is, at least) and Showrooms can be upgraded into infinity. Showrooms are for all users.
The difference between ranchers and merchants are that ranchers can hatch three eggs a day, have a slightly higher chance of hatching a colour, and can sell pets in rancher shops.
Merchants can only hatch one egg per day, but get discounts in NPC shops and can sell items in a merchant shop.
Only real difference.
If you're only interested in selling pets, (and occasional very rare items) or even just collecting more pets become a Rancher.
If you want a more balanced class, try Merchant. Merchants have the advantage of being able to stock items in their shops for people to search for, but still be able to put pets in the auctions and sell on forums. People often use the forums to try to get better deals on pets that they believe are overpriced in Ranchers. That's where Merchants can make their business.
With the exception of holiday quest items, people don't really make threads looking for the common items. They usually just search shops.
