Songdapple nodded, pleased. "You remember? You had eaten some crow-food." She brought out some delishious looking golden-brown syrup with small seeds sprinkled in it. "Do you know this? It's honey with poppy seeds. It's for helping kits to swallow the seeds and to help sore throats."

Songdapple nodded. "It does taste good, very sweet but you can't eat to much or you get sick. you can also treat burns with it. Can you think of other herbs?" she queried.

Ringstar jumped into a small, sandy clearing. "This is the training ground. Nighthawk, What should we start with?" she meowed.

Nighthawk purred thoughtfully, "Let's learn the basics, paw slashes. Featherpaw, you extend your paw, claws unsheathed and slash your opponent. You try." she mewed.

"Lets see, I know catmint is for whitecough and greencough,  horsetail is for fevers, and deathberries and nightshade are both poisonous." said Lightpaw. "That's all I know other than what you just told me."

Featherpaw cocked her head confusedly. "But if our claws are unsheathed, won't they not do as much damage?" she asked.

Owlpaw licked his lips mischievously and swung his paw around into Featherpaw's face, whacking her right in between the eyes.

"I wasn't ready!" complained Featherpaw.

"Will an enemy wait until you're ready to attack?" asked Owlpaw.

Featherpaw snorted and flicked her tail.

"I didn't think so." Owlpaw retorted. 

Nighthawk looked sternly at Owlpaw before continuing. "We will not unsheath our claws today since we don't want to hurt anycat but Owlpaw is right, though not a good listener. You can not wait for the enemy to attack, you must anticipate the move and strike first.

Ringstar hissed in disapproval. "Owlpaw! In training, you wait for your mentor to say start. It may be true in battle but we are only practicing!"

Songdapple blinkled in astonishment. "Very good Lightpaw! I think you'll make a wonderfull medicine cat very soon!" she mewed.

Owlpaw's ears flattened in embarrasment. "I'm sorry." he mumbled.

Featherpaw's eyes gleamed triumphantly. "I won't let that happen again!" she promised. "Owlpaw can never catch me off guard." she purred.

Lightpaw's tail twitched nervously. "I don't know." she said. "Things are kind of... odd." she said "I never imagined I would be a medicine cat." Lightpaw glanced out into the camp clearing. "I wonder if Rocketpaw's out with Dogstrike." she said in a softer tone, hoping that Songdapple wouldn't hear. 

Songdapple looked softly at Lightpaw. "Neither did I. I was a warrior apprentice first but then StarClan decided differently. How about we go hunting then?" she purred.

Nighthawk purred at Featherpaw's heated response. "If you train hard, you will make a great warrior but nocat is invincible. Remember that."

Ringstar touched Owlpaw's flank comfortingly with her tail. "We all act out rashly at times. Let this be a lesson you remember."

"I thought medicine cats weren't supposed to hunt." Lightpaw said, though she did think hunting sounded like a good idea.

"Of course I'll train hard." meowed Featherpaw. "It's in my blood." she purred, glancing at Ringstar.

"It will." Owlpaw said. "I'll wait for your signal from now on and forever." he said. 

Ringstar gave a prrt of amusement. "I won't live forever you know." she teased. She looked at Featherpaw. "Are you ready?" she asked.

Songdapple looked at Lightpaw. "Of course we hunt! I will have to teach you to defend yourself as well." she slipped out the entrance, "Come on!" she meowed.

Featherpaw nodded, and her tail lashed with excitement. "Ready!" she meowed.

Owlpaw shrugged. "Well, as long as you live." he said. "Then you can order me around from Starclan." he purred.

Lightpaw padded after Songdapple excitedly. "So what are we going to hunt? Mice? Squirrels? Fish? Badgers? Toads? Foxes? Dogs?" she rambled on excitedly. 

Songdapple put her tail over Lightpaw's mouth. "Shh" she murmured and crept forwards.

Songdapple put one paw carefully infront of the other, hardly daring to make a sound. She paused and pounced,  her sharp claws digging into the neck of a pheasant. She quickely killed it and brought it back to Lightpaw. "This is a pheasant. Did you see how I caught it? The technique changes depending on what animal you stalk."
