Legends have said that there are more living creatures in the universe, but no one has been able to prove it. After all, we humans live on but one planet out of millions, possibly trillions. Altair, Arcturus, Betelgeuse and Sirius. Bellatrix, Regulus, Castor and Shaula. They are all seen from Earth, All are stars that we know of. What if they all had planets orbiting them? And what if, each and every one of them has at least one planet that supports life? What if our planet, Planet Earth is not the only planet with life? And if so, where is everyone?

I look at the nightsky and wonder if there are more of us, more of us living creatures than what we find on Earth. There must be more, there has to be more! Our eyes and even our most powerful tools cannot reach other planets beyond our solar system. I do not think we are alone, we are never alone. We simply cannot be. There must be life out there in the beyond. Beyond the beyond, even. Sometimes, I lay awake at night and think. Sometimes, I am so overwhelmed by thoughts that I do not sleep. Mother says it isn’t good for me to think so heavily on such a topic, but I cannot help it. It is fascinating to think that maybe, perhaps we are not the only ones out here.

What if our planet should die? Where would we go and how would we live? Such thoughts cannot be explained with mere words…it is more complicated than that.

Shapeshifter

I can’t remember how long I’ve been like this, or how long since the day I was born. In a sense, shapeshifters are made, not born. It is strange, being like this. In my true form, I have no solid form, I must take the image of another to be…solid. It feels like I am a ghost sometimes, not that I know what a ghost feels like and I cannot imagine. I am not good at imagining things…after all, not even my brain belongs to me. I long for the day that I can set off on an adventure…I find myself strangely…imprisoned on my home planet. I feel that we are missing something…something that will change our lives completely but whether in a good way or bad, I cannot say.

Days have no more meaning than a second does to a tree. We can live forever and ever…it is strange to think that I will never die. Strange to think that I shall remain like this for all eternity…sad even.

Mother reprimanded me again today. She said I daydreamed too much. Ha. I am not daydreaming, I am thinking. She does not understand, none of them do. Not even my dear, dear sister who tries to feel sympathy. Time is nothing to me. I have all the time in the world to accomplish what I want to do, so why bustle and hustle around like an insect? Us wereelves are freaks of nature, Mother says. But then again, Mother disapproves of many things. I do wonder if there’s life out there, life that doesn’t take the form of wereelves, life who don’t turn from elf to wolf in the moonlight.

Three species of old set out on quests to find life. How they will do it is up to them. Each individual shall meet challenges that will reward them, or take their lives. Nothing, no prophecies, no omens and no help shall help them now.
