((Forgot to mention that Rose and Zane are best friends. XD ))

Rosalie and Zane sat on the floor in the old, crumbling shack they shared. Rosalie was flipping through an ancient, stained, decrepit book while Zane etched a picture in the dust. Rosalie couldn't tell what it was, but she  knew that it was the same thing he'd drawn every day for as long as she could remember.

"Do you think I'll ever be free of my curse?" He asked quietly, smearing his doodle until it was erased. 

"I don't know", Rosalie replied, glad that her gift was more helpful than Zane's and less of a burden, "I truly don't know."

Taylor stumbled on a rock and fell forward. Her hands fell a few inches from the ground before she kicked in her power and pushed herself back up telepathically. Her tail swished in anger, knowing she couldn't use her power when the threat of raiders were near. She glanced to her right and saw something hidden behind the rock.

When she walked around the rock, she saw a shack, almost invisible from the outside. It didn't look like it had been broken into; having no broken windows, and an unscratched door gave her that thought. She sighed as her stomach twisted painfully in hunger. She hadn't eaten for the past three days. Weighing the pros and cons of entering the house, she realized the pros outweighed the cons. With a sigh, she trotted forward, her ears perked for any sign of danger. She knocked on the door lightly, knowing that anyone inside could have a firearm at the ready.

 Rosalie and Zane bothe jumped up at the same moment when they heard a sharp rap on the door. "Who do you think it is?" Rosalie asked softly.

"I dunno, Rose, but stay back", Zane replied, carefully approaching the door. He cracked it open, relaxing when he saw a girl outside. He opened it the rest of the way and asked, "Who're you?"

"Come in, Taylor", Zane said softly, "For you are not alone. My friend and I hold powers of our own. She can control the minds of the canine species for short spans of time. Me... My gift is a curse. I will spare you the details on it for now."

Rosalie smiled and nodded at the girl. "I'm Rosalie, this is my friend Zane. Although he tends to act like my overprotective older brother." She chuckled at that remark. "He's really not all that bead, though."

Zane sighed with regret. He would have to tell her to ensure Rosalie's safety, and his own. "I'm a mind-reader, although I cannot control my ability. It kicks in when I least want it to. It is a curse, not a power. For whatever reason, though, it has never directed its energy at Rosalie. That, I am thankful of. She is my closest friend, and I do not want to sacrifice that because of my curse."

"Zane, it's not that bad. Remember your power saved my life once..." Rosalie said softly laying a gentile hand on her friend's shoulder. This seemed to make him relax quite a bit.

"You're right, Rose", he said, "It has helped us. But only once has it not been harmful."

"I've tried to control it, but that's probably part of the mutation, that I can't control it. I can't even trust myself sometimes..." he sighed, shaking his head sadly, "I wish that I could just be rid of it. A great burden would be lifted from my shoulders."

"Don't talk like that Zane", Rosalie said softly, "It is a gift and you must try harder to control it! It seems as if you have given up all hope of doing that!"

Taylor sighed. "Now that's the kind of dedication that makes me proud," she said sarcastically. "Hey, I killed plenty of people before I mastered my powers. I just made sure they were my enemies before I tried it," She said, her eyes glinting mischeviously.
