“When you are marked, you’re body pinpoints your biggest emotional problem. To change into a full immortal, you must get over that emotional brick wall before seven years are up. If you do, then your body changes. When it does, you gain ears and a tail plus the ability to morph into a wolf if you are a werewolf, venomous fangs if you are a vampire and so on and so forth. There are only eight kinds of immortals. Werewolves, vampires, angels, werepires, vangels, wereangels, and the most rare of the bunch, werevangels and demons. Once you change, you don’t have to attend cl*censored*es anymore if you don’t want to. Plus, you can leave the institution if you want; but you have to hide yourself.”
“What was your emotional brick wall, Luke?”
“Jace killed our parents when we were ten, and then, when I got married when I turned nineteen, he killed my wife. She was pregnant with my first child. I never stopped grieving.”
We walked in silence after that. I don’t know why, but a certain emotion rose in my throat when he mentioned his wife and his child.
Once I got to the door, hugged him goodbye and sat in my seat to begin cl*censored*, I realized what it was.
Jealousy.
