I nodded my head, as if wanting her to go on.
"And?"
I asked, trying to get more out of her. I expected she was around the age of 16, so technically I already knew that.
"Fine. I'll start."
I said before also taking a piece of fruit. I didn't bite into it before saying,
"My name is Lancelot. I'm seventeen. I lost my father when I was young, but I still have my mother. I hate the idea of war, and I hope that peace will soon come. And, honestly, I never would have expected to be bonded with someone. At least not right now. Ironically, even though I don't like war, I do like hunting. And, lastly, I love playing the organ. Though my step dad took my piano away from me. Said it was noise."
I shrugged, before finally taking a bite from my apple and looking back at her. "Your turn."

Arielle took in the information easily, remembering it would be easy, also. She finished her strawberry, and leaned against an empty part of the table "My parents are dead, and my 'family' isn't even here. Hunting is okay, but I'd rather take care of the animals instead of killing them. Of course, I don't really have a choice. I have to take care of my 'family' somehow. I'm skilled with ranged weapons, and most likely, I probably won't have a place to live for much longer. Now that I've been bonded, my 'family' will think that I'm old enough to get out of their house, so, most likely, I'll probably be kicked out."
Azrielle sighed, her blue eyes searching Lance's face. He was attractive enough, she thought, but what did it matter? They'd be dead on a battlefield before long.

For a long moment, I stared back at her eyes. Finally. Some kind of connection, a conversation that didn't have to do with arguing.
A smile stretched my lips before I ate another bite of my apple.
"What do you mean?"
I asked, my eyebrows furrowing in confusion.
"By your family is 'gone'?"

Azrielle felt herself harden up. No emotion would be shown with the following statement.
"My real family is dead. They got killed by the Empire for being accused of being Rebels."
No words were said after that. Azrielle wanted to scream, to throw things at the walls around her.
"I was adopted by a harsh family. The Empire forced me upon them."

I kept my tone light, as to not upset her more. This was probably already hard to talk about and me probing wouldn't help a bit.
"So... Maybe this 'bonding' thing is good for you. It gets you farther away from your adopted parents."
I said, trying to look at the bright side. Anything to help her settle and feel a bit more comfortable with me.

Azrielle let a bit of herself go, and her tone got softer, only for a moment, thought.
"Perhaps it is good for me. After all, I need..." She caught herself, and hardened her tone so that she didn't sound like such a softie. "I need time to do things on my own accord. When I'm with my adopted family, they tell me when, and how to do things."
She let out a slight smile, quickly wiping it off of her face. Maybe this bonding thing really was good for her. Maybe Lance was good for her.

Hey, she smiled. Even though it was quickly gone, I saw it. It was there. I was making progress with those walls around her.
"So then it truly is good... This whole bonding thing."
I said, smiling back at her before looking around the room.
"So, do you know how long we have to stay in here?"

"The bonding's okay. I just don't like all of these ceremonies and banquets. They act like we just got married." Azrielle crinkled her nose at the last statement. Though one day she wanted to get married, it wasn't any time soon.
"We have to stay until the ceremony's done. Which is right about...." Her eyes flicked up to a clock on the wall, its hands ticking. When it landed on a specific number, she said, "Now. I'm leaving."
Standing up, she then remembered the threatening glances of the Empire's leader. His words echoed in her head.
You must spend every spare minute with him.
Azrielle stopped mid-step, turned, and said, "You should come with me."

I wasn't offended at how she didn't like the idea of us 'acting like we were married' with all the ceremonies and such. Honestly, I felt the same way. It was too much for kids our age. Or any age really. The second she chose to get up and leave, I had already started to follow her. I was also told the rules of this, and I had to spend my time with Azrielle every minute.
She was grand, she really was, but 'every minute' wasn't very appealing to me. "You're right."
I said, coming closer to show I was following.

Azrielle waited until Lance responded to her, then she began to walk out of the building, hoping that she didn't have to go home, where her stuff was probably waiting for her, all packed up.
She just knew her parents were going to kick her out. It wouldn't surprise her one bit if they did. In fact, it would surprise her if they didn't kick her out.
Reaching a high hill that not many people came to, Azrielle sat down on a wooden bench, crossed her legs indian-style, and let out a sigh. The last thing a teenage girl needed was one more thing to stress about. And what did she just receive when she had been bonded? Another reason to stress.
It made her angry. She hadn't known about the bonding until just a few hours before the ceremony. Of course she knew why she wasn't given notice.
If they had told her ahead of time, she would have ran away. She probably wouldn't have made it five miles, but she would get as far away as possible. Who knows? Maybe she would have ran into a rebel camp and joined them.

I followed my other half in silence, letting her think. I sat down on the bench beside her, staring out at the scenery and letting my thoughts wander. I was trying my best to be strong, so that I didn't make Azrielle even more upset. But it was hard to be optimistic when something like this happened. It was hard to find it fair. "Azrielle...?" I asked as I turned to look at her. "Do you ever wonder what would happen if we just left here? The ceremonies, the festivals, the... Well, everything?"
