Thorntail raced through the forest, his breath coming out in icy puffs as he chased after the scent of his leader. Why had she chased after that cat?! He was worried for her. Just the previous moon she had confided in him that she was on her last life. If she lost it now he... he shook his head. He didn't want to think about having to become leader.

The scent of blood overtook him just as he saw a star flash above and he skidded to a stop. Somehow he just knew he would find Gingerstar dead. Slowly this time, he resumed following the scent. He found the leader dead, sure enough, with another dead cat's neck still in her jaw. He gave her a sad smile. She'd gone down fighting. He jerked the cat that had took her life away from her body and moved it away-- ti didn't deserve to be so close to her-- before sitting down beside his leader, silently waiting for the other cats of his clan to catch up.

"What happened!" Lifewing yowled angrily. "Who did this to my mother!" She and Gingerstar were closer than any mother and daughter had ever been before. Gingerstar always told ehr everything. She knew it was the last life, but it happened so quickly...
