"Max!" Cin yelled, over his shoulder, "Max, Carson's been shot!" he shouted. He shrugged his vest off his shoulders, wadding it into a ball and pressing it to the man's wound. He felt Carson tense, but he was careful to keep pressure on his chest. The man's killer grip tightened on Cin's shoulder, earning a grimace from the mutant. Carson coughed, and time seemed to freeze; their eyes meeting for a single moment.

Suddenly Cin felt himself torn away from his place as the human shoved him away with all the strength he had left. He felt his back crunch into the brick wall, a surprised cry of pain escaping his own lips. He doubled over on the ground, staring at the other man. He saw Carson's hand tighten into a fist as he growled under his breath.

"Get out of here, Cin..." he pleaded, a wild look in his eyes. Cin rose stubbornly, ignoring the man's words as he crawled forward once more, holding his blood-stained shirt to his wound. Carson glared up with fiery eyes. "Cin, go!" he roared, sentence cut a moment short with a violent cough. Carson lifted a massive hand as if to push Cin back again, but he was slow, and weak. Cin dodged easily, grabbing his hand as it blurred past.

"Carson, get it through your thick skull that I'm not leaving you!" he roared, eyes momentarily flashing red, as they sometimes did when the timepiece had to reset. It gave him a fiery, annoyed look, only adding to his already determined frown. "Now shut the hell up and let me work!"

((Sorry if there are a few misspellings. xD; I was kind of in a hurry. ;w;))

Max stared out into the dark until Cin's voice yelled out to him. "Christ!" He growled, hurrying down the alleyway a bit to the guy and his friend. "What happened?! Cin, look out!" Grabbing the nearest, heaviest thing, which was a heavy-lidded trashcan, Max easily picked it up and threw it at the shadowed people behind the two on the ground. Groaning in pain, Max was down on one knee due to his limp. Geez, he was too old to be doing this stuff! A few muffled cries could be heard and the sound of a couple of bodies in the stoned pavement. Bullets started to ricochet around Max, but the sound of the gun was silenced.

"Damnit!" Max, growled dodging back into the glass doorway. Soon, the glass was shot out, breaking it into millions of pieces. The stray bullets barely missed Jared, who jumped back from the door in the hallway. "Oy! What is this, Max Daddie?! We got bullets now?!" "Not from me, kid! Those thugs outside!" Max growled, pulling out is little mini revolver. This thing was such a piece of crap. He needed to get a real gun. Well, no need for bickering about it now. Especially when one was getting shot at! "It's Freddy's business, isn't it?!" Jared exclaimed, his yellow eyes unmasked and glowing wildly. He was angry. "Did Cin get shot?!" "No, you idiot! Calm down! Cin's friend did. Get Miranda and Damien. Also, watch Freddy. If he tries to run away, make sure you catch him and get Damien to tie him up or something. I just -knew- something would go wrong tonight!" Max was beyond the feeling of anger right now. Gun in hand, the mutant guy scooted closer to the door, taking a peek out into the darkness.

---------------

Jared had his head hung low, his eyes still blazing. When he caught up to Miranda and the others, he looked up at them. Damien almost fell out of his seat, Miranda turned and gasped, and Freddy pressed himself against the wall. Jared was not one to be messed with when he was angry. "You..." He pointed a finger at Fredrick, who looked like he was about to crumble under the demon's gaze. "You could have gotten Cin killed tonight!"

Freddy tried to run, but Jared was right there at him. Damien stood, his eyes turning black, his cover disappearing. "Let's go. Damien, we gotta watch him until Max gets Cin back around the other side. He's a little -tied- up right now." He let out a deep growl at Fredrick, who seemed to wither in Jared's grip. "And you, sir, will tell us what the heck is going on!!" Damien licked his lips nervously and looked out at the crowd. Most of the humans were staring at them. "Uh..Yeah. Miranda, babe. Take care of these people, huh? Acapella time, baby."

-----------------

Miranda was all over it. She didn't know what exactly was going on, but she did what Damien told her to do. Plus, seeing Jared angry was worse than using all her demonic powers on one mortal. She calmed herself and watched as Jared and Damien struggled to get Freddy out of the club. Everyone was giving them some glances. Time to get to work.

"Ladies and gentlemen, it is with my deepest apologies that this is our last tune for tonight. One of the band members is terribly sick. Please enjoy this acapella treat." With that, Miranda opened her mouth and let out a hypnotic tune that would put the people in a trance, forgetting they were even there that night...

Cin looked up from Carson with a pained look in his eyes, but the human met it with a cold, approving stare. Cin grimly lifted Carson's hand and set it on his shirt, then pulled his timepiece out in less time than it took for his pounding heart to beat. As he turned off the device, he felt his skin ripple as he shifted back into his natural form.

Then, in a flash of wispy, black smoke, he was gone.

All anyone else would have heard were startled cries of pain, and terrified screams as the stream of bullets ricocheted around the ally. Then, in a blood-curling, sickening way, everything went silent.

____________________________

Cin stood over the three corpses, panting heavily as he hugged his arm to his stomach. His fiery, ruby eyes glowed from the shadows, his long, slender tail floating behind him. What was most surprising is that he had come out unharmed. He couldn't necessarily say the same for the cluster of limp bodies bleeding out on the pavement.

He looked back down the large, street-like ally, then once again vanished without a whisper of sound. Before time could count he was back at the back entrance of the club, a murderous glare on his face as red blood dripped from his fingertips. A moment later, an all-too-familiar woman backed out of the glass door, creeping away as quietly as she could. She happened to turn as soon as she cleared the building, and froze at Cin's icy gaze. A moment later, she was pinned against the wall, his hand constricting slowly around her neck.

"Who sent you?" he asked as she stared pleadingly up at him, eyes wide.

"Please, I don't know what you're talking about!" she choked, clawing desperately at his hand. He leaned forward, locking her in place with an infuriated glare. She gagged as his hold on her throat tightened to the point that she couldn't breathe.

"Who sent you?" he asked again, voice slow, menacing, and merely hinting at his anger. He spoke each word as if a sentence on it's own, driving fear into the heart of the disguised mutant.

"...gah-" she coughed, her fingers slipping. His hold didn't loosen.

"Ms. Sally?" the boy asked, clinging to her apron. Her gentle hand came down to rest on his shoulder as she patted him gently.

"Yes, Mark?" she asked, the boy watching the singer. He was slow to respond, entranced by Miranda's singing, but his words came eventually.

"What's goin' on, Ms. Sally?" he asked, hugging himself to her waist. Sally raised an eyebrow, hesitating as she thought something up.

"Fireworks." she said, putting on a fake smile, "Dem boys out back were gonna shoot off some fireworks, but it seems someone accidentally lit the fuse." she explained, "That was all them racket was about. Now don't you worry," she said, "everything's gonna be just fine."

____________________________

Carson stared up at the dusky night sky, half in a daze. He could just hardly see the stars poking through the smoke and dust in the air, but it was enough to bring a smile to his face. It was painful to breathe, but he was at the point where he didn't notice. The man cocked his head to the side, just watching the white lights twinkle in the sky.

He could feel himself slipping away. Darkness was swirling around him, but he just smiled.

"I always wanted to die on a starry night." he chuckled to himself, his voice shaky and scratchy. He felt the urge to close his eyes, but fought, just so he could see the stars. Nothing else mattered to him, nothing else made sense.

But, out of the corner of his eye, he saw a dark form sli[injection]nking through the shadows. The man seemed to take no notice of him, probably thinking he wasn't worth the bullet. But Carson saw as his eyes fixed on Max. Grunting quietly, he took a deep breath.

"Max!" he shouted.

As Miranda finished her tune, everyone in the bar was either asleep or in a deep trance. She didn't want to do this just for the heck of it. They were in dire need now, though, so it couldn't be helped. She noticed a mutant woman over at the bar near the young boy. The woman seemed unaffected, and Miranda gave her an apologetic stare. "I'm so sorry.." She mouthed at the woman, then slipped out the front to catch up with the boys outside.

As she was running out, she heard gunshots from the alley beside the club. 'Oh no! I hope Max and Cin are okay!' She thought, her mind making her think the worst of what was happening behind there.

--------

Max didn't even see the woman come out of the club, he was too busy dodging bullets as soon as he was able to sneak out of there. His senses where heightened a bit, and he could hear the sounds of the bodies hit the pavement, then the silence and then the woman's breathing as she crept out of the doorway and down the alleyway.

Max had his back turned away from Cin and from the sound of the woman, it looked like he caught her. Max wanted to call out to him, to tell him not to hurt her, but he would risk his own life trying to save hers. Max wasn't sure Cin had got all the bad men yet. Also, Cin needed to learn to control his powers. It got out of hand sometimes. It was hard to bring him back to reality when he was in a killing spree.

Max looked down the alley, just seeing darkness. God, it was hard to see. The only light that was shining was from the broken glass doorway, and it just illuminated the other side of the alley wall. Max got in a crouching position and moved out from his hiding spot. He didn't see anything move, but could still hear the girl from the other end until her voice was suddenly cut off.

Breathing heavy, Max tried to focus, holding his small gun in his big, clumsy hand. A grunt was suddenly heard and then his name called out. Max quickly turned but was soon met with someone's fist or butt end of a gun, knocking him out.

As soon as he hit the pavement, everything went black.

--------

Jared and Damien got Fredrick over across the street away from the club. It was awfully dead tonight. As soon as they made sure nobody was around, the two demons ganged up on the mutant. "Alright," Damien started, his eyes black, mixing with the darkness around them, "You'll tell us everything, Freddy. If you don't, I hate to say this, but, we're gonna have to hurt ya, bud." Fredrick looked up at the guy, giving him a pitiful look.

Jared couldn't even say anything to him. He was pacing back and forth, trying to calm down. Jared got really out of control when he was mad and it took all he got just to be reasonable again. It was his part of the curse of being a demon. He just eyed Freddy with his yellow eyes, waiting for him to say something.

Freddy looked at them both, his bottom lip quivering a bit. "I didn't mean it...I mean..I'm not even the right guy!" "What are you talking about?" Damien asked, placing his hands on his hips. Fredrick swallowed softly, then started again, "I got caught up in something back at home. It's some kind of mob who's after me. Apparently, they think I'm the guy that ratted them out of their business! Some other person told them about it and now, I'm a wanted man by them. But I didn't do anything! I swear!" "Oh yeah?" Jared growled some and spat at the ground.

It was about that time Miranda had run over. She panted softly, placing her hands on her curvious hips. "Alright, now. What's going on, Freddy? You getting yourself into some kind of trouble, huh?" She was tired and worn out now. Her powers drained her whenever she had to concentrate on using them. "He says that there's a mob after him.." Damien explained it to her, making Miranda steal several glances at the mutant. He had his head in his hands, shaking it some.

"Yeah, well. I believe 'em." Miranda said. She turned her attention to the streets again, staring at the alleyway by the club. "Look, Cin and Max haven't come back yet. You might wanna go check on 'em or something." She was getting nervous now. "They know..." Freddy suddenly blurted out. "..The mob that's after me..." He looked at all of them, one by one. "...They're all human.."

"Jesus Christ..." Damien said under his breath. Miranda could only bl
ink and stare at the ground. Jared, on the other hand, didn't stay for too long after he heard that. He went to go get Cin and Max, and they were getting out of there. Now.

Cin's tail flicked by his side, a gurgled scream managing to slip through his fingers. The woman clawed desperately at his hand, chest straining with the need for oxygen. But he didn't release his hold. He felt her try to reach for her own timepiece, but like the snap of a cobra he grabbed her hand, pulling it against his chest.

"Last chance." he murmured softly. Neither mutant, nor demon, torn somewhere in between; his eyes were like gates straight to hell. He could see the fear in the mutant's trembling gaze, and he was prepared to use it, in any way he could. She opened her mouth, choking what might very well have been her final time.

Cin dropped the woman, who collapsed a moment later at his feet. She propped herself on one elbow, clutching a hand to her throat as she coughed and sputtered uselessly. It hurt for her to breathe, but the relief was worth far more than the pain. Cin scowled down at her, grabbing her shivering body by the waist a moment later. He lifted her to her feet, the mutant letting out a surprised whimper as he pulled her legs out from under her.

She was forced to cling to his shirt to prevent herself from being dropped, and cringed at the thought on having to do so. In a mere flash of thought, she started into her innocent scheme.

Lifting the sleeping, human boy onto the bench behind the counter, Sara left the child in peace. She wound her way through the tables of sleeping humans, dropping her apron on one of the empty seats just beside the door. Then she pushed it open without a word, leaning on the glass window just outside the entrance. She watched the confrontation between the four band members, silent through the entire ordeal. Then, just after Jared began to walk away, she spoke up.

"I'll stay here. We need someone to keep the Jazz Spot running." she murmured. She felt herself pause. "Even if these humans do know... who we are, I've got no association with you, Fredrick, at least none that they could track. I can cover for you all, it might just help when it comes to getting you folks away from here." She had a slightly grim, but stubborn look in her eyes, and didn't bother trying to hide it.

Nobody had to say a thing, but none the less all of them knew. War was coming.

(( Just as a fair warning, don't read this next part if you have a weak stomach. ))

There was the sound of heavy, uneven footsteps as the human limped down the ally, staying close to the wall. Shaky, hoarse breathing accompanied the damp claps of his feet in the shallow puddles as he rounded the corner, then it all stopped. Carson looked around, not remembering how he managed to stand, or how he had gotten this far. And then he almost lost his lunch.

"Cin, that's disgusting..." he coughed, staring at the corpses in front of him, probably left where they dropped. He fought to look away, hoping to wipe the images from his memory as he clasped a hand to his chest. Two of the men looked... recently... conjoined, one materialized half inside the other. The third looked like he had either been stabbed or strangled, blood pooling in the cracks between the cobblestone.

Carson managed to tear his gaze away, hobbling slowly back towards the front of the building.

"Oooh...Oow.." Max groaned, opening his eyes to a fuzzy darkness. He saw a body moved down the sidewalk, recognizing it was Carson. Cursing himself mentally, Max rolled over on his side, suddenly feeling a wetness under his nose and ond his mouth. He stuck his tongue out a bit and tasted that sick coppery taste of his own blood. "Son of a..." He groaned again, finally getting to his feet.

When he could get ahold of himself, he noticed what damage was already done. He coughed a little, spitting at the ground that was already covered in these poor souls' blood. He looked down the alleyway and noticed Cin standing over the woman.

Grunting softly, he quickly limped over to them, raising his gun. "Alright.." His voice was a little hoarse, but Max made sure he could be heard. "No more of this. Lady, you stay right there..No moving." He aimed the gun at the woman, unsure of what her reaction was. It was too dark. "Cin. You get back out front. Cops'll be comin' any minute. Did you have something to do with this?" He turned back to the woman.

------------

Jared stopped mid-step as the waitress came out of the club and started talking to him. He let out a soft growl, thinking about what Freddy had told them. "Yeah, well...Thanks, Sara...We're planning on leaving here anyway. Not gonna tell you where we're going!" He pointed a finger at her. "But you better make sure nobody finds out that we were here!" He rounded to the side, suddenly bumping into Carson.

Jared blinked, fumbling back a bit. "Whoa...Ca...Carson?! Oh, jeez! Sara! Help me here!" He took the big guy's arm and lead him back up near the club's entrance. "Take care of him, I gotta get Max and Cin! Go on!"

Jared turned around and ran back to the others across the street. Miranda was watching as the woman took Cin's friend inside. "What's going on, J.T.?!" "I don't know! Look! I want you two to take Freddy somewhere. Where nobody knows him, alright?"

Damien turned his cold-hearted gaze to his friend. "And just what do you think you're going to do?" His eyes shifted, his hands already uncovered, his black claws shining.

"I'm going to help Max and Cin...You guys need to keep yourselves disguised...and hidden!" Damien let out a soft growl at this, but he couldn't deny that Jared was up to par with what was going on.

"Alright, I'll take them."

"I know where to go.." Miranda suddenly piped up. "I know where to go.." She repeated, staring at all of them, leaving her gaze lingering at Damien's face. "Alright. I'll go wherever you say.." Damien said, holding onto the woman's side. "Stand up, Freddy." The mutant looked up at them, his frown plastered on his face. He stood close beside Damien.

Jared looked at them all, taking a few steps back. "We'll catch up..." He said breathlessly.."We'll catch up..."

Miranda whispered something into Damien's ear. "See you soon, Jared." Holding onto both Fredrick and Miranda, Damien used his demonic powers and 'jumped' his way out of there.

Jared let out a ragged breath and ran back to the alleyway to find Max and Cin.

Sara's eyes widened at the sight of Carson, that he could see even from the recesses of the alleyway. She rushed forward to catch him when he stumbled into the light, trying to help him stand. She saw him clutching a hand to his stomach, fingers stained red with blood, and let out a frightened cry.

"Carson? My god, what happened?" she asked, trying to support the man's weight. The human grunted as she began leading him back inside, nearly knocking over several tables he was so dizzy. "Come on, big guy, into the back room..." she chanted, a grimace imbedded deep in his face. He stopped just outside the door into the lounge, looking down into her eyes.

"Don't need any help, I be fine." he protested weakly, growling and coughing. He glared at her, still forced to move forward.

Damn, voman, you just von't give up, he thought, sighing as she basically shoved him into the back room.

________________________________

Cin's gaze flickered up as Max came running forward, shifting the woman in his arms. His red eyes pierced the night, burning at the man as he moved forward.

"Cin. You get back out front. Cops'll be comin' any minute." Max said to him, then asking the lady, "You got anything to do with this?"

Cin merely paused for a moment, glaring up at Max. He ignored Max's order, a bit of irritation flaring inside him.

Like hell I'm going to run from this, he thought darkly. He glanced down at the mutant woman, the mahogany bruises already standing out against her pale skin. Her eyes fluttered weakly, her breathing still shallow.

"She isn't going to be able to answer you, at least not for a while." he murmured in a cold, emotionless voice. He knew, from his own experience, it would take at least a few hours for her voice to start working right again. Possibly days after that for her to sound normal.

Cin shoved past Max, walking down the ally just a little ways before he paused. He bent over, snatching something off the damp ground, then a moment later he set his hat back on his head. Gaze smouldering in anger from just under the rim, he murmured behind him, not turning back.

"...Carson?" he asked softly, trying to hide the worry, and sickening dread that was flooding his mind. He feared the worst of the human's fate, and part of him didn't want to hear Max's answer, out of simply not being able to accept the fact that Carson might have died because of him.
