Last night I come online, getting ready to relax before bed and hoping to chat with my good friends in the shoutbox.

But what do I see instead, a new person creating a scene in the shoutbox.  I can see she's new because I click her name and find her start date, which is that day.

An apparently, this particular argument has gone on for some time.

I propose that we put an end to drama caused by newbies entering the shoutbox with a simple, mandatory, SB ban for all new players, no matter their age.  Let them see the shoutbox, but put a notice in the bottom that they will not be able to post for a week, or two weeks, or even 30 days.  This way,  there will be no more running to the shoutbox with outrageous statements that cause the older members of the shoutbox to rise up and retaliate in anyway.

Staff cannot be here 24/7.  They've got lives outside of Rescreatu, and they're human.

Make SB bans for other users accumulate time.  First time, three days.  Second time, one week, third time, two weeks, fourth time, permanant ban or something like that.  Normal rescreatu users should not have to put up with these horrid moments, and shouldn't have to leave their beloved game just because someone cannot behave themselves.

I love my time spent on Rescreatu normally.  I'd love to be able to give my daughter permission to chat on the Shoutbox because she's intelligent and well spoken and would enjoy herself much more being able to talk in the shoutbox.  My son... eh, he needs to wait a bit longer before I'll consider him ready.  But I do not want my daughter exposed to such erratic and often emotional disturbences.  And I'd much rather come here to relax, not to dodge angry folks and irritating newbies.

And if you're worried about them getting the help they need, they can still have access to the forums to read. Many players have help blogs out.  They don't need to run to the shoutbox whining "I neeedddd HELLLPPPP!" Blah.

I love this idea. I fully support, since I dislike newbies becoming all worked up sometimes because of what older players say.

[E] I think 30 days might be a little long ;P

I fully support this idea, as it may weed out the spammers, and should cut down on spamming altogether. The drama really is getting too much, so, yeah, in full support. XD

Yes, it would be good to have them wait maybe a week or so to post.  It would alleviate on spamming, too much screaming for help and a lot of things like that.  However, if we take away the direction that users give on the SB, a feature should be added to the site that directs newbies straight towards the help forums.  This way, they can easily find the sticky thread that has many excellent guides, etc.

There seems to have been a bit of a rise in this lately, and I'm tired of the fights between newbs and experienced players that cause the new players to hate the game and the old players to think negatively of new players.

As far as accumulating banning goes, I don't see any reason for this not to make sense.  Just like in real life, if you have a bad record you will be in more trouble.  This goes for serious crimes and things like fights between friends.  It's a basic principle that should come into play on the SB.

Overall, I would support this idea.  Hopefully this will make newbs more excited about joining the SB when they are better equipped to join in the discussions about the site.

I support this idea, although I think the sb-ban time should be 5-10 days, rather than two weeks or a month, once they create their account. That seems a tad extreme.

This would also take care of trolls or people who dodge their bans and create multi after multi just to be annoying.

[Edit] Oops, forgot to mention I really like the accumulating sb-ban thing a lot also. Support it. ♥

Support this idea, but maybe only a 14 day (two weeks) begginer ban.

Also like the accumulating ban thing. That is a great idea as it would either permenantly get rid of repetitive offenders or they will realise how the SB is meant to be used.

Support. No longer than around 10 days though. xP If more, than the non-n00bish newbs could leave, thinking Res. is too boring.

i disagree, this might discourage people to sign up if they can't chat, maybe a test or something or an auto ban thing if you create drama and a certain number of people report or something

I agree with the cumulative ban idea, but think the newbie ban shouldn't be more than a week, or newbies will go somewhere else. The SB is to build community, and it is doing a very good job.

However, the help blogs should be more easily accessible to newbies if they don't have the SB to get the links posted. The Help link currently points to the disabled wiki. It should point to Whit's sticky post on the Introduction forum, until better help is available, as Whit is keeping links to Rules and help blogs there.

Autoban or a test would probably be more difficult to implement than a waiting period for the shoutbox, and many sites have wait periods for certain things.  I think that the shoutbox should be one of them since it causes so much trouble with newbies.  I personally like the round number of 10 days as long as they log in each day and read the rules of the site.

I agree the help blogs should be more accessable.  I also think site rules should be more visible rather than being a tiny link at the bottom.  A terms and conditions agreement when signing up with boxes you need to check behind each one would be awesome.

I agree with this idea geo, and I fully support it. I think with the shoutbox ban should be around a week, also seeing as they can't post on the shoutbox why not have a link where the text box is there should be a link to the introduction forum. There should be a not on the sb saying.

Sorry you are not aloud here yet! Untill then introduce yourself here

Where the here is in bold, that is what should link to the introduction forums.

Yeah! I think I suggested something similar to this earlier, but letting them see the SB seems like a great idea.

Do it.

I think ppl should just keep the fights and wars in rmail, so nobody else has to deal with it.

I don't quite agree on this one. Newbies tend to ask a lot of questions and the sb is the most common place to inquire about stuff. Rescreatu is not a very user-friendly site. I myself started here with a lot of questions and the sb helped me a lot. The sb is, I guess, a very helpful place for these newbies to ask and get immediate answers. The help section isn't working, FAQs are not accessible (I know there is a thread in the Support section of the Forums, but it is not somewhere easily seen by members) And besides, not all dramas are started by newbies. I see some old members too start to pick up fights with other members. Some users just take some small things such a big deal.

 Just an opinion though!

I'm sorry but I can't agree to this. Simply because I enjoy seeing those fools humiliate themselves.

I'd say we have a report button that allows people to report the trouble maker. Maybe if more than 5 or 10 people click the report button, the reported would have a short SB ban. I'd say the number of reports would be cleared every hour or so.

I'd say banning all new members is unfair and unnessesary. It will make people leave quickly. The SB helps new members feel part of to community and get quick clarification on things they are confused about.

I also think a weeks SB ban when first signing up won't exactly solve this problem anyways. Who said all spamming noob's and drama llama's accounts are under a month old? An annoying person who was blocked for the first two weeks will be an annoying person after those 2 weeks.

I don't know if this would help at all, but I don't think that calling this a "ban" really makes sense.  If there is a newb coming in, we can say that they haven't done anything to deserve a "ban".  It's more like a small wait period.  As Geo said, many sites have wait periods for certain features.

Also, if they are allowed to see the SB, curiousity may come into play here.  As in "Hey, in a week I can join in that and at least try it out!"  I don't think this would cause such a problem with driving people away.

While we're on the topic of banning, I'd also like to point out that curse word useage in the shoutbox is getting far too common.

Now I'm not exactly a prude, but certain words that substitute for other words have been allowed to slide in the shoutbox recently, and more and more people are using them.  You've got some of the original words censored, but not the replacement.

I know what it means, however, and its still offensive, especially the acronyms.  And certain replacements for highly offensive words are just... destroying my faith in this site every time they are ignored.

Back to the original topic.

As for the wait period for new users... tell me, would you prefer to have several hours disrupted waiting for a user to get kicked out when staff cannot be around and there's a troll hanging about shoving comments into the shoutbox or spamming it up? Or would you rather someone came in, found they couldn't chat, and read the site rules and help blogs that are posted in the forums and then either left because they intended on spam and mischief making in the first place, or enter the shoutbox later for the first time with at least a general knowledge of Rescreatu, knowing how to find their own eggs rather than begging for them, and more than willing to work for what they've got rather than sitting in the shoutbox for hours saying "Can I have that, plz! I'm new and have no nice petz!"
