Prologue:

Cerren takes a few steps outside his small but homey cave, sniffing the air a few times and feeling the earth beneath his paws.  The young, russet colored wolf winces as his stomach growls, indicating he needed to find some breakfast.  He takes a few glances around, everything seeming clear and calm, before he leaps out into the forest.  Trees and shrubs flash by as he darts in between them, sniffing out his first meal of the day.  A scent catches in his nose and he stops, frozen.  Cerren looks around and then smiles to himself, sensing his breakfast.  He dashes in the direction of the meal, heart racing, drool forming in his mouth.  The wolf barely has a chance to see the ob
ject before it triggers.  Metal teeth grab his leg and shred his muscles before he even has a moment to figure out what has happened.  Cerren lets out a blood curdling screech, followed by a series of struggling gasps as he tries to free himself.  After ten minutes of struggling, he finally p*censored*es out from sheer exhaustion.

Chapter 1:

Amiya sighs to herself as her two pups dance around her, eager to get going and start the day.  The little wolf family has just started to recover after the loss of most of their pack, including their alpha male.  As alpha female, Amiya has taken on the duties of raising her two pups, in addition to watching over the rest of their tattered pack. Reluctantly, she gets up and heads out of their den, only to find the other three adult wolves standing there looking very somber.

"What is it?" Amiya asked the others, curiously looking between the three of them.  The three of them that remain; Isis, Clover and Giselle, all look to their temporary pack leader with pleading eyes.

"Fine," Isis speaks up, "If neither of you two will say it, I will." The stark white female steps forward a bit, looking so intimidating that Amiya's pups take a step back.  Isis' blue eyes look to Amiya.  "Look, Amiya, we all respect you and your rank, but we have to face some hard facts here." Isis looks at one of the pups quickly, before looking back to Amiya.  "Your pup there...he is the -only- male we have in the pack.  And once he grows up, you know he will want to *censored*ume the role of Alpha male, especially considering his father held that rank.  But, clearly you and he can not breed, right?"  Amiya frowns, looking down at her young pup.  "Isis, you are right...unless we find a new alpha male soon, I will have to let one of you three *censored*ume role of alpha female...and we all know how those...'ceremonies' go...I won't survive."

Amiya and her two cubs set off into the forest, the mood much more dim than before they exited the den.  The strong female halfheartedly sniffed the air, looking for a meal, but with other things on her mind.  She loved her pups and would never do anything to harm them, and she would do anything to make them succeed in life.  But the thought of her own pup taking over as alpha male...and the secondary thought of one of the other females claiming right to alpha female...was almost too painful to think about.  All she could do was hope for some luck in finding a replacement to her former mate...and quickly.  Her pups were already 4 months old.

The female then stopped in her tracks, her ears perking up and twitching about as she heard something...it sounded like a wounded animal.  This would certainly make hunting much easier, she thought.  A silent cue from their mother went to the pups, and they laid down, as close to the ground as they could, masking their scent and keeping quiet.  Amiya crept toward the sound, silently but quickly, her padded feet barely making a dent in the forest floor.  Finally, she emerged into a small clearing and stopped, frozen.  The scene in the clearing looked like a m*censored*acre... a young, but fully mature wolf lay in the middle of the clearing, his foot held firm by the bear trap.  The fur on his leg was matted and bloody, and the place where the trap ripped into his flesh...almost made it not look like part of his leg.  The wolf himself was a russet brown color, which was unusual looking to Amiya.  As she approached, she could hear his endless cries of pain, although he was seemingly asleep.  Amiya reached out with one paw and nudged the unfamiliar wolf carefully, not wanting to startle him.  He stirred and his eyes shot open with a start and the look that Cerren gave Amiya was of pure pain and torment....
