The first chapter of a new story I am writing with some help of a friend of mine from school.

Chapter 1. Mild Cursing

“Gah!” I gasped, breathing heavily as I jerked upwards on my bed. Another one of those nights, where I had to deal with my mother’s car accident. It still haunted me, even after these three years.

Those were the most horrifying ones. I put my hand over my head, closing my eyes as I tried to steady my breathing. There was nothing fun about this. I looked at my clock and sighed. It was way too early to be awake, even if there was school today.

Shaking my head, I hopped out of my bed and trudged my wait over to the bathroom to take a shower. Turning on the water, I walked to the sink, looking at my reflection in the mirror. I wasn’t anything special, just straight black hair with bangs that went over my left eye and the tips dyed blond.

I had pale but only slightly tanned skin and cat green eyes that stood out everywhere I went. I haven’t been called beautiful…mostly scary or freaky but that is just how life works.

Turning back towards the shower, I pulled off my clothes and stepped in, letting the warm water cascade down my back, unknotting my back and relaxing my muscles. The steam filled the shower, clouding the see through door.

Running my hand through my hair, I grabbed the shampoo and quickly lathered my hands up before putting it in my hair.

“KEIRA!”

I dropped the shampoo bottle, scared out of my skin and dropped it on my toe. Stupid Step-mother. She should know I can get up on my own.

“KEIRA ANNETTE GET YOUR BUTT OUT OF BED!”

Obviously, Dad wasn’t home. If he was, she wouldn’t be yelling bloody curses at me. Sheesh, for my father, he could have had better taste in woman…but he probably gave up after my mom died.

My mom died three years in a car accident when she and I were driving home from my soccer practice. But she died, and I stayed alive. If it were my choice, I would have wanted to take her place. She had a life in this world, people who actually loved her.

I, myself, had nothing but a dad that never was home, an evil step-mother, and a little brother who I think belongs in an asylum. But hey, what’s it like to want.

“I’M IN THE SHOWER! LEAVE ME ALONE!”

I yelled back about twice as loud, which made her finally shut up. I hated her, she hated me. We spent every moment we could annoying the hell out of each other. But I usually won.

I grabbed the shampoo off the ground and put it back on the shelf before grabbing the conditioner quickly and washing my hair. After a few moments, I turned off the shower and stepped out, well more like tripped out since I ended up falling on my face.

“Damn it.” I muttered, pushing myself up off the ground and wrapping a towel around my body. I walked out of the bathroom and went to my small closet, filled with only the punk colors.

Of course, I did this because I liked the style and to aggravate the hell out of my step-mom. She wanted a girly girl of a daughter, not the monster of a child she thought I was. Of course, I was only a monster with her.Going into my closet, I looked around for something to wear on the first day of school.

Grinning, I grabbed my love kills slowly tank top, and leggi il topic black jeans, throwing them onto my bed. I ran around the room looking for my shoes, and sighed. Why did I always lose my favorite pair? Probably because I can’t remember anything. I shrugged and went to my dresser, grabbing my lacy black bra and undies before going back to my bed.

Less than five minutes later, I was heading down the stairs, having found my favorite shoes and ready to go. My step-mother was making breakfast for my little brother, Alex.

“Hey Stephanie,” I sang, even though she ignored me. I was used to that though and it didn’t bug me. I grabbed an apple and ruffled my brother’s hair, making him squirm. I laughed and waved to him, running out the door with my backpack over my shoulder. Too bad they wouldn’t let me get a driver’s license, than I would be out of this Hell-hole and actually doing something with my life. If you haven’t already guessed, my name is Keira.

Yeah, I know, it is a little different but my name is the only thing I can remember about my mother, seeing as she was the one who gave me it. Also, after my mother died, I woke up in a hospital bed with the ability to control the minds of everyone, which is really scary because the first thing I ever did to control someone was to stop a doctor from giving me a shot. . I haven’t met anyone like me yet, so I just keep it to myself.

“MOVE OUT OF THE WAY FREAK!”

I jumped out of my skin, turning toward the people who had yelled at me. Of course, I’m already pinned as the odd one out because of my style. Just great, really people, am I that different from you?

Okay maybe I am. I sneered at them and flipped them the finger as I walked onto my new school’s campus. I’m the new kid at the school, knowing no one and not planning on trying to. Thanks Dad, so much for ruining my life. I really hope I can give you a speech about it someday.

Shaking my head, I walked to the office to get my schedule. As I walked in, I coughed, hoping to get the person staring at her computer to notice me. She looked up, blinked and looked me over. I already knew she was going to have problems with me because of my style.

“Name please?” She asked in her little secretary voice that, inevitably, would annoy the hell out of me in the next few years.

“Keira Annette Resle.” I answered curtly; waiting for her to give me the A okay and then letting me leave.

“You’re the new girl in town, aren’t you?  I heard you were coming, but I didn’t expect…such a pleasant surprise.”

Yeah, sure lady, like that was really what you were going to say. Just give me my freaking schedule already.

“Yeah…That’s me,” I answered, leaning on my hip as she sorted through the papers. Didn’t they have all this crap on the computer? Isn’t that what technology is for? Getting rid of the idiots who can’t even find one piece of paper…

“Ah! Here we are, Keira Annette Resle. Well, here are your papers that you need signed by every teacher that you have and here is your schedule. Hopefully, you will meet some friends who have some periods with you that can show you around.”

She smiled warmly at me, or at least she tried to. To me, it looked like a pathetic effort to be nice when she already thinks she doesn’t like me. Yeah right lady, I’m not going to be getting any friends and I don’t want any either. They are big pain in the butt to deal with if you ask me.

“Thanks Miss. Hartch, see you after school,” I muttered, turning on my heel and getting away from her as fast as I could. I ran right out the door and turned to the left, expertly maneuvering between my fellow cl a s smates without looking up. Something I did a lot of the time now.  Now than, what was my first period.

I really hoped it wouldn’t be one of those drop dead boring teachers that put the whole cl*censored* to sleep. Those were the worst because you never could learn anything.

Wow, almost all of my favorite cl*censored*es. Not. Why can’t we get what we want? Oh yeah, because they are in charge. Stupid adults, think they can run our lives. Only think that because they did such a great job running their own.

I walked through the halls, looking for my History cl*censored*, ignoring the stares and whispers I got for the way I dressed. Like I cared. They were just clothes.  Or were they just staring at me? Why would they? I’m a normal person aren’t I? Well if you call controlling minds normal.

I turned into room 32, walking over to Mr.Cleaven’s desk. Apparently he or anyone for that matter, was here yet. Shrugging my shoulders, I moved to a seat in the back of the room. Hopefully no one would notice me. But that wasn’t what happened.

People walked in, and when they saw me, they started laughing. Why would they do this to me? “Hey, shut up you little *****, this is a school, not a point and laugh at the new girl parade. Shut up and sit down,” I yelled at them, making the whole cl*censored* go quiet. I rolled my eyes.

“What? You’ve never heard a curse word? My god what is wrong with you people.” I waved my hands in the air and put my feet on the desk, letting the people stare at me and slowly sit in their seats. My god, they really are idiots.

The teacher walked in at this moment and smiled when he noticed how quiet the cl*censored* had gotten. It was really interesting to see how happy it made a teacher to be listened to. He looked around for a moment, than spotted me.

Oh *censored*.

“Ah. It seems we have a new student at our school. She is from a different part of Oregon, nowhere near here. Keira why don’t you-“

Just as he was about to ask me to stand up and go to the front of the cl*censored* I entered his mind. If anyone had been watching me, they would have noticed how my eyes dilated to twice their normal size. But everyone was waiting for him to say those magic words. Too bad for them that was going to happen.

“-stay right where you are, just raise your hand from where you are sitting,” he ended up saying, receiving groans from the cl*censored*. I almost burst out laughing. I had a weird sense of humor. I raised my hand to them and wiggled my fingers, which many just scoffed at. Oh well, their loss.

I sat through most of the cl*censored* looking out the window, seeing as I already had learned all of this at my last school. I was smarter than these kids, having learned this in middle school. But I didn’t care now. I already knew what I was doing with my life, sort of. Okay not at all, but it didn’t really matter to me because who cared about the future when your past sucks as much as mine does.

Of course, nobody knew this. Not even my dad or step mother. They didn’t know what I had been going through, having said that I had been asleep at the time of the accident and not known what had really happened. No one could try and say different because the only witness was dead.

I remember seeing my mom die quickly, then everything going black. I was the only one who really knew what had happened because I refused to move my story. I still said I never knew what had happened. Nobody knew that I had the power to control others either. I’m guessing that I got this power because I hadn’t been able to control that accident than.

I could have really. I could have stayed longer at practice, or said that I had to go to the bathroom. I could have done a bunch of things, but I didn’t and know my mother is dead. Since I wasn’t able to control it then, I’d be able to now. But it didn’t really help that I didn’t always know what people were going to say or think. As I was thinking all of this, the time had gone by, and the bell was now ringing.

Of course, I got up in time to make it seem like I had been paying attention. Walking over to the teacher, I handed him the note.

“So Keira, where did you live before.”

“I lived closer to the border between Oregon and Washington.”

“What town would that be?”

“I can’t remember actually, because we moved pretty quickly. I never really paid any attention to where I was or have been.”

“Oh, well I hope you enjoy your stay.”

“Yeah, thanks,” was where our conversation ended as I quickly turned away before he could ask any more questions of me. I really hated talking about myself, especially because I could say something that would get me kicked out. I rushed to my next cl*censored*, hoping they wouldn’t ask me questions either…

Finally, it was lunch time. After all those cl*censored*es, you have to have lunch. Really, why can’t they just make a brunch instead, I mean, it would help so many more people with their grades if they just had a little more food during the day. But no one ever listened to the emo – punk girl did they?

I wondered through the school hallways, following the other idiots to lunch, because obviously I had no idea where it was. I had never heard of Hart Valley High School let alone been to it, so why would I know.

Suddenly, I found myself shoved into the lunch room, which was loud, messy and was an utterly horrible place to eat at. Hasn’t anyone ever heard of the world clean? God, I can’t believe I’ll be here for the next few years. This will be worse than finding out that I could control minds.

Sadly, I had failed to notice a girl’s head swing in my direction when I thought that, and I turned towards the lunch line. They didn’t have anything good at these places, ever. Well, I can just eat when I get home.

I turned away from the line and walked a few steps forward, just to see if anyone would wave to me and ask me to sit with them. Surprisingly, one girl did, who was also sitting alone, and also had the same style as me. Except from here, it looked like she had blond hair instead of black.

I tilted my head slightly, but rushed to go sit next to her so I wouldn’t look like a dork who didn’t know where the hell she was supposed to sit. When I sat down next to her, she had a curious but friendly smile on her face as she looked at me.

I started getting kind of freaked out. I mean , who stares at somebody like that and not expect them to get weirded out.

“Um…Do I have something on my face?” I asked, giving her a look, that said for her to stop staring at me.

“No silly, not at all. You haven’t eaten since breakfast and you already made sure that you didn’t have anything in your teeth or on your face. By the way, I’m Taylor, it’s really nice to meet you. I haven’t met anyone like me before and this is really exciting, seeing as your different and I’m different.” She laughed. Taylor?

Hmm...Nice name, I mean it’s better than Keira. Don’t get me wrong, I love my name because that’s who I remember my mother but having a name like Taylor would be so much cooler.

Wait, how did she know that I checked if I had stuff on my mouth?

“Wait, what do you mean different. For all you know, I could be just like every other person on this world, let alone like you. And how did you know that I made sure my face wasn’t messy? How am I like you? I mean we just met, and besides us having the same style, there is nothing alike about the two of us.” I answered, shaking my head in denial.

“Well, that’s not a nice way to meet someone who is being kind to you. Besides, I know about you already so it doesn’t really matter Keira.”

“How do you know my name? Are you some sort of freakish stalker because I’m serious, I will throw you across the room if I have too,” I replied.

“No I’m not a stalker. And I already know you can control people’s minds. Don’t look so surprised, you should have known there were others like you in the world. And how do I know your name? How do I know everything about you? Because, I, my new friend, can read minds.”
