"Say what you need to say. Say what you need to say. Say what you need to--"

"Could you stop that?" I snapped at my friend as he sang the lyrics from John Mayer's, 'Say'. He sighed and settled his hands into his lap, light blue eyes looking out onto the open water. I relaxed my muscles and ran my hands through my spiky black hair in an attempt to hide how awkward it had just gotten. Travis dipped his fingers onto the surface of the murky brown water as the motor of our boat chugged its way back into the marina.

"Enjoy life, would you?" he said as he rounded his pale blue gaze on me. I snorted and rolled my eyes, focusing myself on steering the boat free of any other passerby ships. "Honestly, man." he continued.

"Honestly, you're beginning to annoy me," I responded as I swerved the boat to splash some water on him. He ran a hand through his dampened sandy blonde hair and sighed.

"Man, when are you going to realize that you gotta open up sometime? Say what you need to say, you know?" he said and it was my turn to sigh.

"I'm happy as I am, Trav."

"Not with Katrina, you ain't." he responded with a teasing tone in his voice, but I knew he was being serious.

"She'll realize it eventually," I said with a shrug as I pulled into my dock.

"Uh-huh," he responded dully, thoroughly bored with the turn the conversation was taking. He didn't understand how much I loved my next door neighbor, Katrina. How, sometimes, I would take her out on my boat, but as a friend. I could never truly work up the courage to tell her how I felt and I hoped, oh, how I hoped, that she would someday realize that I spoke the truth when I said she was the most amazing girl on the face of the earth. Corny, I know.

"I'm gonna kick snooze-ville. Catch ya later, man." Travis said as he leaped off the boat and bounded up my dock.

"'Course he leaves me to clean up the boat," I muttered as I tied it up. I figured I should have at least rinsed the salt water off of it, but at the moment, I was too lazy to. I flung my jacket over my shoulder and walked up my dock, finding myself singing John Mayer's, 'Say.' I groaned when I realized this and cursed Travis for the irritation.

My thoughts fled over to Katrina. Livin' up the same old moment. Knowin' you'd be better off instead, if you could only ~ Say what you need to say. I growled softly to myself and tried to rid myself of the lyrics that were flowing through my mind. "I can't tell her. What if she leaves me?" I argued with my thoughts.

You better know that in the end, it's better to say to much than never to say what you need to say again. I threw away the thoughts again; at least, I attempted to throw them away. There was no use, the music was stuck in my head. I fiddled with my watch, the alarm going off at a random time as it had been doing as of late.

I never did see my the change of ground I was walking on; going from earth to road. I never did hear the screech of the wheels or the honking of the horn for me to get out of the way. I never did feel Katrina's horrified gaze on me as she watched it happen. And I most definitely did not feel the impact of the car.

I woke up a few minutes later, but I wasn't truly awake. I could sense others around me and nothing about my body would listen to me. I couldn't feel anything, not even the pain. My eyes opened, but I had not willed them to and I realized; they weren't my eyes. I was looking down at the scene. My broken and battered body, bleeding as people crowded around me. They waited for the ambulance, but everyone knew I was a gonner. I knew it, too. So did Katrina.

Katrina, with her beautiful blonde bangs hanging in her eyes, hiding the steady stream of tears that leaked from her honey colored gaze. Her frail form shivered and shook as she held my hand. I could hear the words as clear as day when she said them, but I knew that had been her intent.

"I never had the chance to tell you and now I never will. I always loved you," she murmured to my ear as it grew cold. Even if your hands are shakin' and your faith feels broken. Even as the eyes are closin', do it with a heart wide open. Wide heart.

That stupid, irritating, beautiful, and wonderful song had been right all along. I had never listened and here I sat, watching the love of my life tell me how she felt about me and I no longer had a way to tell her that I loved her, too. So, they took my body. They cleaned the blood. They buried me. And in the end, I was forgotten.

And I was gone. I had never told Katrina what I needed to say so here I am, left alone to wander in my regret in the afterlife. So, my advice to you.

Say what you need to say.
