Comments and criticism welcome.

Prologue

the light gray and white she-wolf walked nervously back to the den-area of the Redwood pack, a dark gray and white wolf pup in her mouth.  She knew she'd be in trouble, and there was fear in her emerald green eyes as she approached the alpha of her pack.

The Alpha sighed as he saw one of his wolves with the unfamilliar pup. He stood up and jumped onto the snowy ground off the boulder he'd been sitting on and approached the light gray she-wolf, tail raised and ears forward. He gave her an irritated look. She dropped the dark gray and white pup out of her mouth gently, and the alpha knocked it onto its back, keeping it pinned to the ground with his paw. "What's this, Lythia?" He asked, looking straight at the light gray she-wolf with the emerald eyes.

Lythia was silent, only looking at the pup, and not up at her alpha. The pup had blue eyes, but they would later fade into a more natural color, like green, yellow, brown, or orange. Lythia looked guiltily up at the alpha, not answering.

"Well?" The alpha growled with impatience.

"I found him." Lythia replied quickly. "...In the Nothing."

"You WHAT?!? What were you doing out there?!" The alpha snarled in Lythia's face. She backed away, thinking she was going to be bitten. "You'll lead them straight back to us!"

Lythia crouched into a submissive stance. "I was hunting, Curren! I didn't mean to cross the border...It was an accident!"

Curren-the alpha- sighed. Well, they're likely to kill her now. Curren asked, letting his paw off the dark gray and white wolf pup.  The pup's tail was between his legs as Curren closed his eyes and sighed. "And you brought him here why?" The grey alpha sat down, angry at Lythia.

"He was alone." Lythia said. "Right on the border. I couldn't just leave him there, he would've froze to death!"

"Do you know what happens when a Redwood wolf goes into the Nothing?" Curren asked her.

"No...I...I don't know." Lythia admitted.

"You're going to die because you didn't know why you went into the nothing, despite all the rules and the warnings they've given us? They've specifically told us not to go in there, and that they will track down and kill anyone who does."

"What do you mean? What do you mean by 'they?'" " Lythia was confused.

"The Kohzars." Curren said. "The wolves who live in the Nothing."

Chapter 1 : The Outcast of the Pups

three months later

---

The dark gray and white pup who had been found at the border by Lythia three months ago had been kept by the Redwood wolves to become a member of their pack.  He'd been named Bangle, and had never been told that he wasn't born into the Redwood Pack. He was too young to remember the day when Lythia found him, or any day before it.

Bangle sat in the clearing, watching the three other pups play. The strongest of the three was a reddish-brown and white pup with yellow eyes, and was the leader of the three. Her name was Akime, and she didn't put up with insults or disrespect from the other pups. Whenever one of the other two pups would call her a name, she'd tackle them to the ground and they'd be pinned. That usually scared them enough to make them apologize.

Bangle was smart enough that he'd never been tackled. That, and the fact that he was too afraid to go anywhere near the other three pups. Akime had a brother and  a sister. Her brother was dark gray and black with a small white dot on his chest. He had orange eyes, but to Bangle it seemed that they were sometimes red. Akime's brother was named Kaos, and was Akime's 'second-in-command' of the group of three pups.

The third pup was a white pup with a gray patch on her back and a gray tail-tip. Her name was Sookie, and she was the runt of the three, and often the victom of Akime and Kaos' attacks.

Akime and Kaos were play-fighting on a nearly flat rock, seeing who could push the other off first. Bangle watched jealously as the other two pups had fun while he had to sit by Lythia's den.

Lythia came out of the den, and noticed her adopted son sitting alone. She sat down next to him. "Why don't you go over there with Kaos and Akime and Sookie?"

Bangle sighed and looked at Lythia, not wanting to explain, and went over to the other three pups. He felt like there was someone watching him.

Bangle turned and saw Curren glaring down at him from that huge boulder the alpha always sat on. That alpha had always seemed to hate Bangle.

Bangle turned away from the alpha and saw that Akime and Kaos had stopped play-fighting, and were sitting down along with Sookie. They were staring at him, as if they were confused as to why he would've came to them.

Akime spoke up in her voice which was oddly feminine for such a strong pup. "What do you want?" She asked, an irritated look on her face. Bangle didn't care about her ex
pression, though, she always seemed irritated to him.

"Can I play with you guys?" Bangle's voice was shaky and afraid. Akime was a big pup and she frightened him.

Akime growled a puppy growl, and tripped Bangle. He fell onto his side, and Akime rolled him onto his back -something higher ranked wolves would do to one who is lower ranked- with a strong paw. "I don't know." She growled. Akime wasn't playing. "Can you?!" She bit his face, and he yelped, and was instantly shocked when none of the adult wolves came to break up the fight. Then Bangle remembered- Akime was Curren's daughter. The alpha's daughter, and the strongest of the alpha's litter. And she was free to do what she wanted.

Bangle would have to defend himself, or pay the price.

He growled a puppy-growl, sounding nothing like a ferocious wolf. Akime looked back to Sookie and Kaos with an ex
pression on her face that told them that Bangle was far too easy to beat. Bangle saw Sookie and Kaos' faces, and he'd had enough.

While Akime still looked at Sookie and Kaos, she was off guard, expecting no attack from the weaker pup. That was when Bangle bit her left front leg, the one that pinned him down. He put all of his strength into the bite, and didn't let go.

Akime yelped, and jumped backwards off of Bangle, pulling her front leg out of his mouth. Bangle quickly stood up, and could see the shock on her face as she looked at him with wide amber eyes. Kaos and Sookie were obviously shocked that Akime was being beaten. Akime looked at Bangle, far angrier than before. She ran at him, and Bangle prepared for her to leap at him, but that was exactly what she had wanted. She dove at the ground under his feet, tripping him.

Bangle gasped as he fell, and started to get up, but she was too fast. In seconds, Akime's jaws were around the back of his neck, and she used her jaws to push him to the ground. She didn't put any pressure on his neck, but he got the idea that she could if she wanted to.

Bangle whimpered pathetically, like an omega. Kaos and Sookie burst out laughing behind Akime at Bangle's weakness.

Satesfied, Akime removed her jaws from Bangle's neck. He stood up, ears back and tail between his legs.

"Run away to your mother!" Kaos barked, still laughing. "Like the runt you are!"

Bangle growled.

Akime snarled, and he stumbled a few steps backward with a yelp. The other three pups laughed harder, and Bangle's head hung low.  Akime smiled as she snarled again.

Bangle ran off, tail between his legs, and ears flat to the ground. He stopped next to Lythia, who looked down at him, showing no emotion. Bangle couldn't help but wonder if she was dissapointed in him. He looked up at her, holding back tears. He didn't want any of the other pups to see him cry. It would only add to their reasons to laugh at him. "Are you mad at me?" He whimpered.

"No." She replied. She looked at Bangle sympathetically.

Bangle looked away for a second, thinking. Then he turned back to her. "...Why?"

"Because." She said. "You are my son, and Akime is older than you. that's the only reason she is stronger." Lythia was silent for a moment, then added; "You fought well."

"No I didn't! They beat me!"

Lythia was silent, then spoke again, only to repeat herself. "You fought well."

Chapter 2 : The Rules

"The day will come, Bangle, when you are just as strong as Akime, if not stronger. She is far older than you. It wouldn't have been possible for you to win."

Bangle sighed. "Then what should I do right now?"

Lythia shrugged. "Try and stay on her good side."

"She doesn't have a good side, mama." Bangle said. "She just wants to kill everything."

Lythia sighed, sitting next to her adopted son. "Maybe it's because of what happened to her mother."

"Her mother?"

"Yeah." Lythia said. "She died."

"Why?" Bangle asked. "What happened to her?" The pup's ears were flat to his head.

"She...she broke the rules." Lythia said.

"What?" Bangle asked.

"The rules have been decided for us Redwood wolves to follow. They were given to us by the Kohzars. They forbid us from going into the Nothing. The Nothing is what our pack calls the place where the Kohzars live. There's only one rule, and it's simple; any Redwood wolf who goes into the Nothing will be tracked down and killed, if they aren't caught right away. If they're caught right away, they die, also. The Nothing surrounds our territory, so we can never leave." Lythia felt awkward speaking of the Nothing, since she had found Bangle in the Nothing, and had broken the rules and gone into the Nothing. Kohzar patrols were probably hunting her scent right now. Unless she got really lucky.

"So, Akime's mom went into the nothing?" came Bangle's sad voice.

"Yes. And the Kohzars killed her. That's why we have no alpha female, just the alpha male; Curren."

"I think he hates me." Bangle admitted.

"He's just like that." Lythia said. "Don't take it personally."

Bangle nodded. "Why doesn't Curren choose a new alpha female?"

"Because wolves don't choose another mate if their mate dies." Lythia explained.

Bangle looked up at her.
