A few users here either don't bother to log off, forget to, or suddenly quit their Internet page without logging out then realize they won't be coming back on for a while.

It might not be something crucial in one's actual gameplay, but if some stranger or sibling or friend amused by weird humour (not naming any, but they're I've met several x3)  decided to punish or play a trick on an account that isn't being used by the active user, then quite a lot of stuff can go downhill. For instance, someone might think it's amusing to mess with one's vulnerable account, by releasing pets, getting rid of TU, deliberately insulting people, ect. You don't need to be an expert at Res to figure out how to do all that. I can't really think of anyone who might do this, but oftentimes people find their accounts still logged on by accident or mistake, and, being unable to do anything about it, maybe feel a little wary about who'll have access to their stuff. Edit: Especially on public computers, like in libraries, and maybe iPhone shops, school computers ect. Those who are accustomed to leaving themselves online might accedentally do it somewhere else, and I've seen quite a deal of people point out that they're playing in school.

Plus, I find it quite irking when I get all excited about seeing a friend of mine on the Users Online page - only for them to be stuck on Pause or Viewing Profile or Reiflem for hours on end. I don't get annoyed directly at my buddies - because I'm an absolute hypocrite here, and I've accedentally remained online several times before - but I think it would be helpful, considering since the Users Online page keeps track of people's activity - and their log in/out status. Someone's account might be logged in, but the person doesn't actually have their computer/iPhone/laptop/whatnot on. The whole point of the Online Page is to see who's on and busy, not to list all the users who have left themselves logged on but aren't actually there.

So, as a matter of safety, I was suggesting maybe an auto log-out system, wheres a very inactive account (is, say, stuck on a particular page in the website) can be safely logged out by the website's system, on  a 15-minute time lapse or something? Half an hour even, maybe? I don't know the difficulty of the coding and whatever, and constructive criticism and advice is welcomed, but please don't get too mean here. x3 I'd like to hear your opinions.

Edit - Maybe, it could be optional? As a few users respectfully disagree with me, maybe some users can decide whether they can or cannot have an auto Log-out for their accouunt? Just like in Preferences, where you can change and edit your gameplay to your liking.

o.o

I have firefox and it automatically logs me out of any site I had been logged into when I close the browser. But I guess for people that don't use firefox, it would be a good idea.

I have Firefox too - all the computers in my house do. But it doesn't log me out like yours seems to. Do you do anything in particular for the computer?

Nope.

I just have firefox remember all my pa-sswords and such, since I'm bad at remembering them. xD That could be the reason, but I'm not sure.

i don't really think this is necessary. i leave my account logged on on the two computers that i mainly use. i don't worry about someone just walking in on my account b/c they're home computers. i don't think it's very probable for two res users to randomly get on res on the same day, in the same city, in the same building, on the same computer. i mean there's only one other res user that i know of within 50-100miles of where i live. i'd just find an auto log out an annoying inconvenience...

Heh. I always leave my account logged in, because I'm too lazy to retype my p*censored*word every time I visit Res. (Which is very often) It doesn't really harm my account, though, because I have my own laptop which always stays in the house, and no evil little siblings. However, if I visit Res on another computer, I always make sure to log out. I think that most people who use public computers log out after visiting Res, so an automatic log out system isn't really necessary.

'Kay. Thanks for your replies. :3

What I mean, of course, is if you leave it logged on a public computer. Darn, I'd better edit my first post to point that out... Home computers, where you're the only person who plays Res? Well, I suppose that's fine. That's your business. I guess I was only saying it from my perspective - I've got a sister who also plays Res. xD

You disappear from the online users page after 15 minutes of inactivity. :B

xD Yeah, I know that one. Sort of. I knew you disappeared after you log out; I wasn't so sure about the inactivity part. Thanks for the note, I never actually knew that.

I'd support if it comes with the on/off option.

I support.

One time, my brother was mad at me for some reason, so he came and started insulting people on the SB. Luckily a friend of mine was on at the time and realized it wasn't me, so I didn't get banned or anything.

I just never want that to happen again. -shudders- It'd give me a bad name.

I dont think it has to be auto log out, I dont mind being logged in for a while longer really. It might also get irritating if youre talking halfway in the sb and
*poof* Opps, res has logged you out! Please sign in again :D
However, it would be nice if when I logged out at one computer, Im logged out on all the computers Ive used. So if I dont feel safe like dint log out somewhere else, I can use any computer to log out. :D
I dont make any sense do I?

Sorry but I find an all-mighty auto-log-out annoying :/. I like that I do not have to log in every time on my home computer. And honestly, those who have to worry about immature siblings can always click the "log out" button, it is there :/. For you to log out takes one click. For me to log in takes 20.

But as a compromise, how about a check box, like in Yahoo Mail, that says "Keep me logged in for 2 weeks"? Those who want to stay logged in (like me) could check it once in two weeks. Those who want to be auto-logged-out every time just leave it unchecked.

Lut: As far as I noticed, if you log in to Res on a different computer the other computers log you out. If I log in to Res from a public place it asks me to log in at my home computer which it usually does not.

I agree with this because I leave res logged on in my laptop, but in school when I log in I am slightly paranoid because one day I might forget to log out and come here to find my stuff missing. I'm not sure if the browsers in school are set for automatic log out or not, but it would be nice to have an option to so like in email accounts.

I also like Yaiz's idea with the 2 weeks thing, or whatever set time. It would be like "keep me logged in for 2 weeks" "log me out after being inactive for 15 minutes" and "keep me logged in forever"

It will take a slight weight of my shoulders and I can rest easily knowing that no one will steal all of my pets because of forgetting to click a link o3o

First I thought 'No support  - it would be annoying, and I'm lazy. So I like to stay logged in.' But then... I remember once, because my sisters and I share a computer, one of them was logged in, and I accidentally did lots of threads and stuff... on her account. So,

Support.
