Basically a little story-thing I wrote within 15 mintues xD. Enjoy it. :) Yeah, the ti
tle fails.

The night was warm—it was summer in Scria. The air was damp and smelled sweet; the clouds that often floated around the planet made misty patterns on the lakes and rivers whenever the silver light of the moon pierced through. Enchanting lights blinked on and off. There were hundreds and thousands of them. It was the light being given off from the fireflies. The fireflies that were so beautiful. Yet their lives were so short.

Yes, life was fleeting. Like a flower, it would blossom quickly and be amazing to behold for but a day. The next it would wither and be gone. The Ezahni Zenair knew this very well as she guarded her egg. All around she could see harsh eyes that were aggressive. They would try and steal the baby and eat it, before it even had a chance to see the four planets with its eyes.

Slowly the eyes grew closer. Now the figures were made visible by the light of the moon. Two Vogars, growling with hostility. There was no intelligent talking at this time. No. Vogars would not be ones to listen to reason. They were much too aggressive and proud to do so. Two against one weak, starved mother meant a very slim chance for her and her unhatched little one. Her baby would hatch soon, she knew. Tonight, even, it could happen.

“I love you, my child,” Zenair whispered to the egg. She stood up, then, on her four legs. Her horn flashed in the silver light. Standing at full height, the two Vogars knew that this Ezahni was a force to be reckoned with. But they also knew that she was at her weakest. They could win. One Vogar walked slowly behind the mother, then other stayed in front, showing its teeth. The egg, for now, went unnoticed. And unnoticed by the Vogars and its mother, a hairline crack suddenly went from the bottom straight up to the top of the egg.

Blood suddenly spattered everywhere. The two Vogars had pounced, one attacking from front, the other behind. The natural female Ezahni kicked with its hind legs and hit the Vogar behind her on the head. It fell to the ground and lay there, limp. Dead. Zenair drove her horn through the other one’s heart—oh but not before it bit her neck. Both Vogar and Ezahni fell to the ground.

Much blood still flowing from the wound, Zenair struggled. Dragged. Pulled herself in order to get closer to her egg. The egg that was now shaking violently. It was about to hatch. Her child. She could not reach. She was dying and she knew it. She let out a wail; a terrible, sad sound. One more pull. She struggled again. Finally, she reunited with her egg, curled her body around it. A second later out of the egg flopped out a male. A black male Ezahni. Zenair did not have the strength to lick it, nor keep it warm now. She was at death’s door. But at least she got to see her precious son.

Her son! Oh, how could he live without someone to care for him and to love him. She let out another low, sad moan. Oh, please, let some beast hear it. And then--!

A faint pink line appeared on the horizon. The clouds that were so thick at night began to thin and slightly fade and lift off of the ground more. A figure came closer to where the dying mother and newborn baby were laying. It was not a Vogar. It was a Kioka. Zenair’s heart grew cold. The Kioka’s were known to dislike the Ezahni. But it was her son’s only hope. Her vision nearly completely gone, she could not tell whether it was a male or a female.

“Have… Mercy,” she begged, her voice not even a whisper. Then she died.

Continuation:

Even after she had died, Zenair's dull eyes seemed to look pleadingly at the Kioka standing before her. Why me? the Kioka thought. You foolish Ezahni. Like I'd help a creatu who is the instigator for this hate between us. Then the female Kioka looked down upon the baby. The sight made her heart melt. The small thing, obviously male, lay shivering near its dead mother's corpse, a pool of blood around it.

"What a terrible sight," she whispered, her voice soft. She came to a decision then and there. "It's not his fault he was born Ezahni. And he is not the cause of the fight between us, after all." Finally she came up with a reason good enough for her to do what she wanted to the moment she saw the little guy deep down-- to save him. She approached the newborn, her hooves skimming just above the ground, her blue ribbon rustling in the breeze.

"Come, little one," she cooed, her voice sweet and soothing. With one of her silky, glossy ribbons she caught the baby Ezahni and set him on her back, where he would be warm and secure. At first the small thing protested and did not want to be held there. A second or two later it calmed down after finding it was warm. The Kioka knew that he was probably hungry and needed food as soon as possible. But he would have to wait, just a little while. Food could be provided back at home. Then, with the speed only a Kioka possessed, the tender new mother raced away.
