For this month's featured articles segment, froggy and Enid_Black have been kind enough to let us in on their thoughts on being an artist for Rescreatu. They describe their experience and how it has helped them to grow. We hope you enjoy it!
My name is froggy4510 (Liz or froggy). I mostly revamp items and draw items for the site. I found this site from another site with a banner of Rescreatu and Rescreatu looked awesome! So I came on and was like, wow! I had a major art block for a year and a half but when I saw Rescreatu, items and pictures started popping into my head that wanted to be drawn. I went to apply for staff and am now an artist for this site.
When I first applied to be a staff member on April 25, 2007, I did not know a thing about computer art. Robin thought my line drawings looked good and said I could do some for the site. I really wanted to learn to color on the computer. So I was working on gimp and open canvas trying to figure every thing out. It was hard but it was fun. Arcablue showed me how to hard cell shade and gave me lots of tips and help.
I have been very busy revamping items, doing items and prizes for Muffin Day, and also doing some premium items. I have also done some staff squishies and balloons.
Many artists have helped me out as I am still learning the ropes and will always be trying to learn more. I have gotten much constructive criticism and advice from other artists. They have helped me out a lot in improving my art. As an artist, you have to be able to take criticism like clay and mold it to better your artwork. I hope that does not sound too strange, but it is true.

My name is Enid_Black (or Lauz, if you want to be friendly), and I am the current Head Artist here at Rescreatu. I have drawn anything and everything for the site, from items to Creatu. When I was first considered for the job, I really had no idea how to do things the 'pet site' way. I had worked at another pet site previously, but I had mostly drawn the pets for them so items threw me through a loop.
In the earlier days, Rescreatu did not have a set shading style so I used my usual soft-shading. This quickly became obsolete as better, cell-shading artists were hired. To be honest, I felt very intimidated. Cell-shading was not something I was familiar with or that I particularly liked. Of course, I had to conform. It proved to be difficult, but the more I had to do it, the easier it became. In addition to learning to cell-shade, drawing directly into Photoshop (my program of choice) was tough to get used to. If you draw on paper and scan it, the item may appear much too small when you shrink it down to the 90x90 pixels. So, in order to increase my quality of work, I definitely had to learn to draw on the computer. This may have been the most daunting task of all, especially when using a mouse to do so. But, as with everything, pratice is key.
When I had those two skills mastered, I had to face the hardest thing of all: criticism. To be honest, I really don't take criticism well. It makes me feel like someone is saying my stuff isn't any good. Learning to take constructive criticism is probably the best skill you can acquire, and it is the biggest achievement I have made here. Looking back upon my time here, I really have learned a lot and improved my artwork quite a bit. Working at Rescreatu has been so beneficial to me and, even now, I am continuing to learn from the many great artists that we have.
